The pillar of Shahadah is all about Muslims' witnessing their faith to God. It is the most important pillar of all five pillars. Muslims declare their belief in the oneness of God over the course of the day. The words they recite are "There is no god but God; Muhammad is the Messenger of God." These words are the public declaration of the Muslim faith that defines a person as part of the Islamic community.

Throughout the day, Muslims will ritually pray five times. This is called salah. Before Muslims pray, they must go through the ritual washing called wudu. In this ritual, they wash their mouth, nose, ears, face, hands, arms, and feet. They also must be wearing clean and proper clothes. During the prayer, Muslims will face the in the direction of the Ka'bah that is in Mecca. Muslims will stop wherever they are and pray.

Zakah is all about giving charity, or almsgiving. This is not an option for Muslims, however, it is an obligation for them to follow. A belief is that almsgiving will free a person from obstacles that are blocking them from Allah. It does not matter if you are rich or poor, Muslims still need to practice this pillar.

All Muslims are required to fast for a month long each year during Ramadan. During this month, it is believed that Muhammad had his first revelation from God. Fasting reminds Muslim to practice and fulfill their obligation of taking care of the poor and needy. When fasting, Muslims cannot eat or drink from dawn until sundown. They also should not argue and stay positive during this time of fasting.
