In this excerpt of The Jungle, the author is in the room where the meat is prepared. he watches as they prepare the food and he writes about what goes on in these factories. He talks about the harsh working conditions and the horrible things that the workers have to endure. There were odors so bad that they could not stay in the room long. They also got injured frequently and were expected to go right back to work. When he says that he aimed for the public's heart but hit their stomach, he means that the purpose of this book was to show the public what these workers had to go through in hopes of gaining some support for their cause. Instead he showed the public how their food was processed in an unsanitary environment and people seemed to care more about how their food came out than the people it hurt to make it. He wanted to get some recognition on behalf of these (mostly immigrant) workers and get the public to back his stance. Instead he caused an outrage over how the public's food was prepared and how dirty the workspace was. This was an incredibly influential piece, but not in the way that Sinclair had hoped.

He describes things like the conditions of work, which were very gross, and bad for the workers and the meat. He also speaks of the low wages they received, being that most of them were immigrants. He was aiming for the heart of the people in writing this to change their mind and turn them against the gross and terrible ways people had to work, but instead he made people realize what they were consuming, how it was processed, and how they were supporting the business by buying and eating it.

In this excerpt, Sinclair describes the horrors of the meat packing industry in Chicago. He describes the unsanitary conditions that the meat was packed in, the negligence of the bosses, and the poor conditions that the employees were forced to work in. When Sinclair says he "aimed for the public's heart but hit them in the stomach," he means that he wrote this to expose the horrible treatment of workers in factories. This article was meant to spur change in working conditions. Instead, the public was more appalled by the gross, unsanitary conditions that the meat was packaged in than the plight of the workers themselves. Instead of sparking workers reforms, Sinclair's article prompted the formation of sanitation acts such as the Meat Inspection Act and the formation of the FDA(Food and Drug Administration).

He was attempting to draw attention to the mistreatment of immigrants and how poorly their working conditions were. This is why Sinclair said, "I aimed at the public's heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach.” He felt that nobody took into account what the real pain was in the workforce.

The things that were described in these excerpts from the book is the conditions of working in a slaughter house of cattle. Cattle were killed and processed in this place. Upton Sinclair in his book tried to explain the state of the terrible and unsafe working conditions that immigrants and low class workers were working in. Instead the public focused more on the processing and how their food was being made. They were very unhappy with this. In the book Upton describes the fact that the food was unhealthy. Examples of this is that they stopped selling Grade 2 or 3 meats. This is because less people bought these. Instead they came up with schemes to get people to buy parts of the meat that were extremely unhealthy. For example some of the meat would be rotten, but they just removed those parts and sold them anyways. Another specific example mentioned in the excerpts was that the meat sat in chemicals and often was covered in soda to get rid of rotting smells. These excerpts clearly expose the fact that the meat processing plant was only focused on making a profit not on the safety of the food or the workers. When Upton says that he was trying to reach the heart of the nation this means he was trying to show everyone how bad the working conditions were and gain sympathy and support. No one in the nation cared about the workers though, instead they were focused on the fact that the food was so unhealthy. This shows that the nation was "hit in the stomach" instead because they were repulsed by the condition the meat they were eating was in. Overall, Upton's book "The Jungle" did bring about change just not the change he hoped for and was trying to gain support for.

He explained how there was an absence of sanitary standards, and the things that would come into food were just utterly disgusting.

This excerpt of the jungle describes life working in a meat factory and how it is processed. He talks about what the workers have to do, like clean the meat from the machines. A lot of the meat is spoiled and gross to work with or be around but most of it is still sold. The excerpt discusses the terrible conditions workers were put it. They had to do unsanitary and unsafe jobs for very low wages. Injuries were common, and when someone got hurt Sinclair says someone else had to stay after to make up for their work. Sinclair wanted this to hit people in their hearts because of the poor factory workers, but people were more concerned with the meat they were consuming. The public focused more on the sanitary issues rather than the conditions of people.

In the excerpts from the Jungle, Sinclair describes the conditions and reality behind the American meat packing industry. Sinclair explains how ill and diseased meat was used, even when known to be sickly. This meat, as well as other odd sickened ends of an animal were not disposed of, but that categorized as "special" products, such as boneless and Californian hams. These conditions were ignored by inspectors, and the immigrant workers continued their work. The plants Sinclair investigated also were highly unsanitary, as workers had nowhere to wash their hands and meat was mixed with other products, commonly having rats and cigarette butts in "morning sausage". These conditions were the main concern of the public after reading the jungle, as Sinclair hit the public's stomachs, not hearts. Sinclair intended to call attention, not only to the meat packing itself, but to the laborers forced to work in such conditions. He outlines many injuries by machinery, nauseating tasks, such as the pickler, and the inhumane jobs immigrants were pushed into. However, the public was largely unaffected concerning this issue, only concerned with their own health and wellbeing, not that of poor laborers. Overall, Sinclair's main intent in writing "The Jungle" was ignored, as the public focused on the treatment of their food, and workers rights and conditions continued to be ignored, while laws regulating production increased in public demand.

The sick cows, contaminated and dirty meat mixed in. And the jobs the workers must do, which can be dangerous and dirty for low pay.

In these excerpts from The Jungle, Sinclair describes the conditions and treatment of employees and cattle in meat processing factories. He writes about the appalling working conditions and the disgusting environment they worked in. An example of poor working conditions is found in Chapter 5, "One day a man slipped and hurt his leg; and that afternoon, when the last of the cattle had been disposed of, and the men were leaving, Jurgis was ordered to remain and do some special work which this injured man had usually done. It was late, almost dark, and the government inspectors had all gone, and there were only a dozen or two of men on the floor."

When Sinclair said "I aimed at the public's heart, and by accident, I hit it in the stomach," he meant that when he tried to raise awareness about the upsetting working conditions employees had to tolerate in the meat industry, he raised awareness to the unsanitary and gross way meat was processed, packaged, and more, leading to the passage of the Meat Inspection Act.

The Jungle excerpts describe the way meat was packaged and processed and also the dangerous and unsanitary conditions in which the workers worked. Sinclair states "he was working in the room where the men prepared the beef for canning, and the beef had lain in vats full of chemicals...they emptied the vat on the floor, and then with shovels scraped up the balance and dumped it into the truck...every few days it was the old man's task to clean these out, and shovel their contents into one of the trucks with the rest of the meat" This describes both the gross meat production and the dangerous scenarios the workers were forced into. When Sinclair said he touched the public stomach instead of their heart he meant that he wrote to inform people about how bad it was for the workers. Instead the public ended up caring about the meat being produced unsanitary than the people who worked their and the conditions they endured.
