El origen de su nombre no es cierto, los históricos proponen dos diferentes posibilidades: el origen FENICIO "Bayharia" que significa " Tierra que desciende hacia el mar" el origen ARABE que significa "puerta del viento". Durante el siglo XVII se transforma en la residencia de verano de las familias nobles de Palermo, como la familia Branciforti que construyó Palacio Butera. con el pasar de los años la zona tuvo un fuerte boom en la construcción de las villas. luego nacen las primeras villas: Villa Palagonia y Villa Valguarnera, con prevalente estilo  baroco, construidas por el arquitecto Tommaso Maria Napoli. 
En 1769, Salvatore Branciforti construye "U STRATUNI", la gran calle,"U STRATUNIADDU", la pequeña calle y la Iglesia Principal
Además de las villas Valguarnera y Palagonia están:
-Villa Cattolica:museo con pinturas del artista Renato Guttuso;
-La Cartuja:collecciones de famosos juegos sicilianos;
-Palazzo Aragona-Cutò:biblioteca de la ciudad;
-Villa San Cataldo 
-Villa Sant'Isidoro:hoy es casa museo;
-Monte Catalfano;
-El Museo de las Anchioas
