quest'anno vorrei nuovamente organizzare un piccolo aiuto per i piccolini delle medie. avete delle buone competenze ormai e quindi, con il mio sostegno, potete dar loro una mano. sarebbe sicuramente al pomeriggio,  qualche ora. in caso potrete anche decidere in modo organizzato alternarvi, basta che il servizio sia coperto per il periodo che concorderemo. appena le questioni relative all'orario saranno stabili vedremo i dettagli (anche con il prof. ebury, visto che quest'attività per voi conta come CAS.

Secondly, the 30th July and the 1st of August i participated in a local volunteering which consisted on 6 hours dedicated to clean the beach of Ostional before the arrival of the turtles the next day. In this cleaning we recollected and picked up every single piece of trash we saw on the beach. I did it together with other 11 persons which were from different parts of the world having different reasons to be there. This was done to clean and give the turtles a good environment fro them too lay there eggs.

This CAS experience helped me improve my discipline and getting to know with problems our world faces every day. If i had to give myself an IB learner profile in my opinion it would be caring for my service and balanced by bettering myself in many different aspects.

This summer, I went back to my family in Arraba, where I have relatives from my dad's side. Every year during the summer, schools offer various types of summer camps, typically for children in grades 1 through 8. My cousin is a teacher at this school. Every year, I try to help her because it's a possibility. When I can, I take that chance because I love helping with this type of thing. I enjoy helping a lot, and I have a role. In this case, I enjoy having the kids look up to me and being able to be part of their day. This year, I was able to go, but unfortunately, it was the last day. I found out as I was getting into the car to go, which was really sad, as I was ready to have new fun activities with the kids. My day started at 7, I went to school, and each period, we had a new class. This was a perfect solution; this way, my cousin and I were able to use critical thinking to find new activities to do with each class. We had students ranging from first grade to fifth grade. I enjoyed this day so much.

The students began to call me their teacher, which was fun. We did various activities, from painting to creating a paste mixture, making bracelets, drawing, etc. I enjoyed the kids' laughs and teaching them what to do and how to do it. My cousin trusted me and gave me responsibilities. Sometimes, she'd leave class to get something. I was there with them, I was able to keep order in class, talk to the kids, some found out I could speak Italian, or that I took a plane to go there, or that I lived in Italy, and were shocked. It was a lovely day, I love having a role and helping with it, the kids harmonized saying "Miss fairuz, Miss fairuz" (I'm serious), which was very fun to hear, and I'm glad I made their day and mine memorable, and my cousins' day less stressful. I have a lot of pics, which I'll attach.

Since I am not yet 18 years old,  I go there with the educators from “Sogno di Tommi”, an association that collaborates with Gaslini Hospital and has a library filled with books. I have also brought a document that my parents have signed.  Their objective is to read books aloud to hospitalized children to promote their emotional, linguistic, and cognitive development. Initially, when I started going there for my personal project,  I observed how the educators interacted with the children during these activities. The first days were trial days to help me understand the process better, and then I also started reading to children. I’ve always enjoyed spending time with children. My family and I have been involved in activities for children’s charities, such as those for children without parents. Every Christmas, we organize a party with friends, including a tombola, and ask each guest to bring a box of milk for the children at “Abbraccio di Don Orione”. The next day, we deliver the collected milk to the charity. We’ve been doing this for many years, since I was little. This charitable experience has inspired me to spend time with children and entertain them, helping me understand the importance of kindness. Additionally, my Italian teacher has always encouraged me to read books to expand my Italian vocabulary; however, I find it difficult to concentrate when reading alone. Reading to children makes the experience more engaging and enjoyable for me. This opportunity will not only help me improve my storytelling skills but also enhance my vocabulary.  I want to understand how these activities influence their well-being and explore the impact of storytelling development.

I organized this CAS project in this way: I did online lessons of 90 minutes each, if the student had enough time that is, through google meet or whatsapp. I would bring sheets of notes in order to explain the theory clearly but I mainly used the book of the student who needed help. This way he could improve when I was not with him. I also gave homeworks, especially theory, and usually push them into using the method I taught them

Just today the founder of the association asked me if I would be available to do a short interview for the Primo Canale, to talk about volunteering, the association, my experience with the children at Gaslini, and why I am doing it.

Meanwhile, 3 DP students continue to help some MYP1 and 2 students with their English.

For my TOK essay, I discussed the prompt: In the production of knowledge, does it matter that observation is an essential but flawed tool? Discuss with reference to the natural sciences and one other area of knowledge.

Through the experience at the University of Genoa, where I worked in the biology lab, doing many interesting activities, I was able to develop ideas and examples for this prompt. Some of these activities were measuring the biodiversity of animals on the Ligurian coast, with the quadrants, observing small animals in the underground, through a microscope, and drawing with bacterias.

The Miller-Urey experiment, which I used to support my essay, came to mind when thinking about the experiments I conducted during this experience. Moreover, I directly observed the strengths and the weaknesses of discovering something through observation, points I wrote in my essay, to develop the implications of flaws in this process. Through this method, I was able to interpret what I saw, considering the biological processes involved behind it. Furthermore, I understood that observation only reveals something, and not a complete phenomenon, and based on how scientists interpret these findings, the theory produced can be different. Moreover, I was able to understand more clearly what the possible flaws in observation are, and through this experience, I understood that observation is essential in biology and in the natural sciences because the production of knowledge depends on empirical evidence and the gathering of data, qualitative or quantitative. The flaws of this process can be due to human perception, measurement errors, or instrument inaccuracies. Some of these flaws can be sampling bias, researcher bias, lack of control over other variables, and measurement errors. This impacts the reliability of the theory produced with observation, which automatically becomes unreliable or with a short extent of generalization.

While creating crafts this summer and experimenting with different techniques and mediums, I found that each one had different strengths and weaknesses, and there were certain things that simply could not be made with certain materials. For example, I could have, in theory, made my music note hairclip with crochet, but it would emanate a completely different image. When it is made with hot glue like I did, the image it emanates is more elegant and refined. Instead, if it were made with crochet, it would be more soft and cute as it would be fluffy and less detailed. They would not have the same message, even if they are the same object. This made me reflect on how the message of something can change depending on the medium that is chosen to create/communicate it, which can be applicable in many different subjects, not just the arts. However, the field in which this remains the most relevant is the arts, mostly because the idea of a “medium” has been well defined throughout its history. The most common definition of it is the materials which are used to create it, which is how I defined it while making my craft, but it can also be defined as the artstyle which is used to express it while using the same materials. Another example of this during my crafts is the small needle felt keychains I made. I chose this medium specifically because of its soft appearance, which would make the animals I made look more cuter. Instead, if I had made them out of something like polymer clay, I could have maybe added more detail, but I would have forgone the softness I wanted it to emanate. In traditional painting, this can be applied to different art styles, even if they use the same paint type. Impressionist, Neoclassicist and Roccocco styles generally all use oil paint, but they all have distinctly different images they emanate.
