I really got into the story when Anthony and Rob where kidnapped by pirates. Before hand the plot moved slowly and there was minimal action. I just felt bad for Anthony since his life kept getting worse. But after they joined the 'Brotherhood', a group of Buccaneers, there's a lot more action, like fights and grand pirate ships.

What would happen if Anthony returned to England? He was (falsely) accused and convicted of steeling silver and sent to be a bondslave for seven years in Boston, Massachusetts colony. However, since he and his friend Rob were captured by Buccs while his master was away, no one will think that they were kidnapped, and instead labeled runaways. Anthony would not be able to ever return to his home.

I liked when Anthony stabbed Francis Paul in a sword duel. Even though it got him banished from England, it felt very satisfying. Since the beginning he's been a snob and a little bit of a bully. And when in Boston, when he got a bad master while Anthony and Rob got a good one (which was karma), he was so whinny and ungrateful. And when he stoed away on the pirate ship, he was upset with having to become a buccaneer. What was worse was that in the battle of Puerto Bello, he didn't fight with the buccs (while others sacrificed their lives). And, even worse still, he killed Captain Dawkins by shooting him in the back, AND blew up the Oxford, trying to kill Admiral Morgan, Anthony and the crew. Finally, he's a secret papist/Spaniard, which are their enemies. You can tell why it was so satisfying to see Anthony kill his enemy.

This reminds me of another book I've read, Maggot Moon. The main character, Standish, was bullied and had no friends, just like how Anthony was, in a way, bullied by his uncle and cruel master and had no friend. But in both, as the story progresses each get a friend, their only one, true friend. Unfortunately, Anthony's friend, Rob, was killed by a cannon ball from the Spaniards, the villains in the book. Similarly, Standish's friend, Hector, is killed by the bad guys in Maggot Moon. Both are upset, but find a way to move on and complete their goal. All in all, Pirate Royal reminds me of Maggot Moon because of the parallel friendship journey.

Even though he was cleared of the crime he was wrongly convicted of, and so should never have been sold as a bond slave in the first place, he still wanted to send money to his former master who had bought Rob and him to repay him since he never got their full seven-year service. This shows how loyal Anthony is in that he still wanted to right a wrong that was never really wronged.

Today in America, most buildings aren't castles or made out of stone. Also, most towns don't have high walls with drawbridges, and aren't practically forts in strategic positions.

There's always the suspense of what he's going to find, and if he'll be found out. It adds another aspect of writing that was previously unfamiliar in this seriese, and I think it adds to the plot's excitement.

I was very surprised when Orman revealed he had learned that Will was really a Ranger. It was unexpected because Will had been very careful and good at posing as a jongleur (traveling entertainer, like a one-person circus. Some do acrobats, some juggle, and some, like Will was trying to pass as, sing and play an instrument.) Orman was able to rattle off all these little points that most wouldn't find one, let alone all of them, but together put together the puzzle. This revelation also brought a twist that Keren was the villain who had poisoned Orman's father [and now him] (I had suspected Keren was up to something, especially after he gathered a group of bandits and warriors not pledged to the lord of Macindaw, who was Orman after his father became indisposed.) instead of Orman, who we were previously lead to believe. All in all, that chapter brought many surprises and revelations that made my head spin and thickened the plot.

What if Will, Horace, and the Skandians fail to successfully take control of Macindaw? First of all, they would most likely die trying, but if they failed yet survived, the Skandian group would probably still suffer from huge losses, and Keren would then be constantly vigilant for another attack. The Scotti would come from the North, as was previously planned by the conspiring villains, and use Macindaw as a kind of base. Then, they would attempt to take over Araluen, spreading their vast army across the land. Either they would succeed and take over, take over and occupy part of Araluen, or it would at least cause mass destruction if they failed their invasion. Even though it's currently unknown by the King and Araluen, this siege is crucial for Araluen. Not to mention if they fail, who knows what will happen to Alys, who was captured and is held prisoner in the south tower. SHe could die or become enslaved by the Scotti, or even torchered for information about Araluen since she's a royal Courier.

If I was the character, Will, and Alys, my friend, was hypnotized to kill me by the antagonist who's also there, I would lunge for the sword, and take off and throw away the blue stone. The stone is Keren's focus point for his sort of mind control, and so if I were to get rid of it, I would break the power over my friend without harming them. Then, I would deal with Keren, probably by shooting him with my bow and arrow. He had killed Lord Syron after all, and attempted the same for Orman, and was a traitor of the country by dealing with the Scotti. Though I completely saw the acid being thrown at him coming, ever since Will left it behind in her cell after his failed rescue attempt in the last book, book 5.

I don't like how Will can't get Tug, his horse, back because of the Bedullin's rules. Will had lost Tug in an awful sandstorm despite his greatest efforts. Even though Tug is Will's horse, he more than just a mount; he's Will's friend, and he's grown to love him, as the author has made us during this saga. He went off to look for him while the rest of the group went on. But he was faced with many challenges, from his compas being compromised by iron hills and going off track, to running out of water and the terrorizing heat. Though the worst part is that he's saved by the Bedullin, a group of nomads in the desert. And as luck would have it, Tug was rescued by one of the Bedullins also. Yet they won't allow Tug to be returned to Will because they have a rule, like finders keepers, where if you let go of your horse and it runs away, anyone can take it! So to sum it up, Will lost his beloved Tug and thought him dead, then miraculously survives and is reunited with him just to be denied him because of a stupid rule. This makes me frustrated and sad for Will and Tug, who has shown he still loves and is loyal to Will.

He was hot in the boiling sun and thirsty. At one point he was even hallucinating and crawling around, about to die. But now I think I do like this book because it picked up in the end. Will was able to survive and be reunited with Tug, his lost horse, and save his captured friends from execution. Even though they thought Will was somewhere in the desert and that they'd die, Will came through and saved them, along with a small army of Bedullins (desert nomad tribe), who he was able to bring together with some Arridi to beat the Tualaghi (tribe of pillaging thieves and merciless murdering desert nomads).

I was a little surprised when Halt and Crowley through a big graduation party for Will because Ranger's are usually mysterious and subtle, and don't throw big parties. Then again, Will had just become a full fledged Ranger, so I guess it was call for celebration. I was also surprised that Evalyn gave the Arridi 20,00 reels of silver since they (Will) just saved him (Selethen, Wakir of Al Shabah of Arrida). Included the 20,00 she payed the Bedullin, which was well deserved, that's 40,00 reels of silver her dad, the king, will be paying. Not to mention the reward for capturing Yusal that she should get, which should pay off Erak's ransom. Then again, the Arridi did help, and Erak, Oberjarl of Skandia, has to pay back king Ducan anyway, so technically, they're not losing any money, Erak is.
