Is Posting Selfies good for your Mental Health?

Researchers have been studying the effects social media has on a person's mental health. Psychology Today posted this tweet with a link to their website with their findings on how social media can be addictive and what people post does matter. They suggest everyone ask themselves three questions before posting an image of themselves online. "1. Am I posting this image because I want people to make me feel better about how I look? 2. Am I showing the real me? Am I posting this image of myself because I'm feeling anxious or depressed?" Don't post a selfie because you want someone to make you feel better. The more you focus on your looks, the worse you feel about it. What happens when people are too busy to like or comment on it? Feelings of depression and loneliness can set in. It's good for people to ask themselves these three questions before posting selfies. (Today)

The Royal Society for public health and young health movement conducted a survey of 1500 young people between aged 14-24 years old about how each social media site is affecting their mental health. The survey showed that Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and the worst one Instagram has a negative impact on Mental Health. It causes feelings of inadequacy and anxiety. YouTube was the only social media site that was listed with positive effects for Mental Health because people felt they found people going through similar issues as them and could find found in the videos posted.
Besides YouTube, social media is causing a lot of people to have self-image issues because people get picked on if they post an image that isn't flawless or perfect. Cyber-Bullying has never been easier because of social media. Making young people feel depressed, hurt, alone (Campbell).
"A number of studies have found an association between social media use and depression, anxiety, sleep problems, eating issues and increased suicide risk."

Social media is a number of online sites to focus on communications through posts or images. This is an interactive way to communicate with family, friends or strangers (Nations). The first social media website was called Six Degrees and it was created in 1997 (Hendricks). Since then social media has skyrocketed, into popular sites as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and so on. Social Media has evolved a lot in the last 20 years. There are thousands of social media-based websites for all different things like posting, blogging, photo sharing. Companies and Organizations are signing up for social media because they know millions of people are on these sites and it is the easiest way to reach out to them ("The History of Social Media: Social Networking Evolution!").

Though social media has a lot of negative effects on mental Health there are some positive effects. People struggling with mental health issues and do not have a good support system around them, find social media beneficial (Ring). One of the biggest concerns professionals have about people with mental health issues are they tend to isolate themselves. Social media allows those who are struggling a way to stay connected with other people. It can be a way to talk about how they are feeling through blogging or posts. It can also be a way to find help or find others going through similar experiences so that they do not feel so alone (Bennett)

In conclusion, social media is a way to connect with others. Mental health is the emotional, psychological and social well-being of people. Social media can be positive on mental health if used right but most of the time it is not used correctly. People become addicted and worry about self-image and what others think of them. Social has a lot of negative effects on mental health and this should not be taken lightly.
