Body Dysmorphia or BDD is a psychological disorder where one is obsessed with their own physical flaws-rather that be imagined or minor. This obsession is often in a more negative/demeaning way in which a person perceives themselves as. It´s important to note that this runs deeper than just insecurities, because almost everyone is insecure about their body in some way.

A main cause for body dysmorphia, ESPECIALLY in the western world is the narrative of skinniness as the beauty standard: this image is fed in tv/film, modeling, ads/commercials, and even clothing trends. With this standard constantly being pushed, it causes people to often be dissatisfied with their body with can lead to BDD and eating disorders (talk about that later)

Other risk factors/potential causes include:
-A family member who has been diagnosed with BDD
-Child abuse/neglect
-Societal standards of beauty told from family and friends
-Poor Self Esteem/Self Worth
- Neural; Dopamine and Seretonin could play a part

*Causes of BDD aren´t clear cut, but rather a combination-with genetic, environment, cultural settings, and self image playing a role.

Here is a quote from someone who suffers from BDD.
¨ It is an awful thing to be betrayed by your body. And it's lonely, because you feel you can't talk about it. You feel it's something between you and the body. You feel it's a battle you will never win . . . and yet you fight it day after day, and it wears you down. Even if you try to ignore it, the energy it takes to ignore it will exhaust you.”-David Levithan
