They find a good place for their homes or cities and decide they want to build a life there. Also, because traveling constantly with no home is very stressful and not very good. Imagine always having to move to a different place, nearly every week or maybe even day. You also need places to get food, water, and other things like that. In modern times, most people settle because their jobs change. Also because certain weather, like if it's too cold or too hot, or if it gets lots of hurricanes or storms. Their town might be falling apart, or they just want a change of pace. For example, if someone lived in Alaska, they might want to go live somewhere warmer for a change of pace. Sometimes there are some things that they can sell like gold, that's why people settled in California. Some people are poor, and need to go to a place like a jungle where they don't need to get a coat, gloves, hat, etc. because it's warm and there is many fruits and plants. People don't want to walk (far), drive(far), or fly a plane everyday when you could just move there. But if there is no reason, people might not move. They dont have to constantly move around tons of people when they move, and it allows them to stay around to farm livestock and harvest plants. It also allows them to set up nicer permanent homes, as well as create markets and ways to sell things.
Settling also needs to fit your needs. 1. Because of food, sometimes food storage runs out.
2. Family, if someone or someones, live in a different place, their family will move to be with them.
3. Weather. Weather can get BAD, hurricanes, tornadoes, and tsunamis (there are more) can cause destruction and death. If there are weather problems people have to move. 
4. Jobs. Jobs change, if someone gets a job in a different state or country, the family will most likely move.
5. Money. Sometimes people move because of money, if they don't have enough they may have to move to afford a living. 
6. Housing. Sometimes people don't have enough money to afford the house they are living in. Sometimes they would like a bigger house, if they have lots of kids or they are just cramped in their house.

Now we can get food, water, and homes from things like stores, our fossetts, and cities. Some people might need to move because of their job, or maybe their retiring and may need a smaller, safe, reliable home of which doesn't cost too much.
