The Danger of a Single Story

In the Ted Talk a woman talks about her life growing up as a Nigerian woman. The point of her speech was to explain that when you hear one story you do not know the backstory of what happened. Some people write and tell stories about things that happen to them or other people but not everyone will interpret them in the same way. When people hear a story about someone they have their own view of the story but often times they forget that there are multiple sides to every story. In "Their Eyes Were Watching God" the town warned Janie about Tea Cake. The town saw the side of Tea Cake that does not have money, they assumed that he was with Janie to get her money. Janie was able to see both sides of Tea Cake and she began to trust him because of his personality and kindness towards Janie. Everyone should remember to always see both sides of the story because you never know how everyone is on the inside and the outside.

What is White Privilege Really?

White privilege is favoring white people over blacks in situations. For example, if two people were at a crime scene and one person was black and one person was white then the police would most likely question the black person first just because the color of his skin. Society is sometimes unfair and cruel to people who are colored. White privilege is the result of racism. People are more afraid of black people just because they have darker skin, people will cross streets to avoid a black man but do not move when a white man walks by. Nobody takes the time to get to know black people, they just assume that they are bad just by looking at them.

A girl must live for other people. In the short story, a girl, does everything from washing the clothes to making dinner. As a girl she has a lot of responsibility and if something is not done right then people will look at you in a different way. In Their Eyes Were Watching God, Janie lived a life like this. When she was married to Joe Starks she had to take care of the shop and do everything for Joe. Janie never got the chance to live a life for herself, she was always living through Joe's life. When Joe was mayor she also had to be civil and responsible, she never got to have fun with other people. In the short story the girl learns how to make sure everything is perfect, Janie also had to make sure everything was perfect in order to keep Joe and the town happy.

A black man, Daryl Davis, attends KKK rallies but he does not participate. He goes to the KKK rallies to observe and further educate himself on the topic. Through the video we learned that the KKK leader, a white man, may not have the same views as Daryl but he learned how to respect him. In Their Eyes Were Watching God Janie did not like how Jody treated her but she still was able to respect him without violence. Jody treated Janie very poorly and Janie hated it but she always kept quiet and to herself.

A caged bird is stuck in its cage for its whole life. The bird has clipped wings and cannot sing its tune because they do not have freedom. In Their Eyes Were Watching God Janie was trapped In Jody's power, she was practically in a cage. Jody did not allow her to have a voice or any kind of power, a caged bird does not have a voice or power. Janie was forced to keep her hair up and to wear fancy clothes. The bird had to have his wings clipped, Janie was under Joe's power that she essentially had her "wings" clipped so that Jody could control her movement. Janie and the caged bird have a lot in common and they both strive for freedom against their cage.

In this TED talk a woman, Kelly Lepley shares her story of hiding her true self for forty years. Kelly was born a male, and as she grew up she decided to push aside her thoughts and grow up with her given gender. It was not until he was married with kids that she decided to start research on why she did not feel like a male.
After five years of research she decided to become a woman. In the TED talk she talks a lot about how being true to yourself is very important. In Their Eyes Were Watching God Janie was hiding behind her true self and was unable to do the things that she wanted. When she was married to Joe she had no choice but to follow his lead and be apart of his life instead of her own. It was not until she married Tea Cake that she decided to start living her own life and be happy. Kelly Lepley and Janie were both trapped in a life that they did not want to live but when they decided to start living the life that they deserved they lived the way they wanted to.

When Elizabeth became older she decided to create an organization called HeForShe. The organization encourages men to help women live a better life. Elizabeth created HeForShe to create a more equal society and to show men that women deserve a good life. Millions of men have joined the cause and are encouraging other men to join too. HeForShe is an amazing organization that helps the world to become more equal.

How Movies Teach Manhood

In the TED talk a man, Colin Stokes, talks about how movies promote male empowerment. Lots of movies lack female characters and have a majority of male protagonists. Colin has a daughter and has enjoyed watching lots of movies with her. while watching movies he learned that one of the only movies that had a female leader was "The Wizard of Oz." The main character, Dorothy, is the leader who brings everyone on a journey, the male characters do not lead her. It teaches young girls that they can be independent and leaders. Other movies with main male characters normally show men with power over women. These movies teach young boys that its okay to have power over women. In my opinion movies need to have more female characters who are leaders and have some kind of power.

Uplifting Women With Gender Equality

Although women's equality has greatly improved over many years, it still is not the best. Many people believe in God and that he created everyone equally, everyone should be treated the same regardless of their gender. Men and women need to stop competing for power and realize that they are equal to each other. In Their Eyes Were Watching God, Tea Cake thought of Janie as an equal and allowed her to be her own person. Once Janie and Tea Cake realized that they were equal, they were able to get along and conquer obstacles together. They never competed against each other for power. People need to realize that we were all created equally, we should all work together rather than against one another.

In this video a woman shares the idea that it has taken women lots of time to gain rights. When women were finally able to vote they never stopped fighting to gain independence. Women are still paid less then men and the male to female ratio in the government is larger amounts of males in the government. Women need to remember how to stick together and how to be there for each other. There are tons of organizations that promote women's rights and gender equality. "Gender equality isn't just a women's right, it's a human right
