Lodgepole Pine
The Lodgepole Pine was a very tall tree that we saw that was so full of green needle like leaves. We saw many that were far above us, towering down as we saw pinecones scattered around the bottom. The trees smelt delightful and I thought that the crew seemed to think so too. The cones were very hard and a bit spiky, so it probably wouldn’t be wise to step on one without shoes or anything.

Aleutian Canada Goose
These birds seemed very aggressive when we neared them. The crew probably didn’t seem to care much for the animals. They looked like a normal duck but a bit bigger. They weren't very beneficial but they could be good to eat.

The Hidatsa Indians helped them in many ways. They stopped there during the winter for shelter and help. There, they met Sacagawea and Charbonneau who helped them on their journey. The Natives lived north of the Mandan village of Rooptahee in the upper Missouri region. They were similar to their Mandan counterparts. They were actively involved in trade with their visitors and grew many crops in exchange for trading goods.

Private Pierre Cruzatte was of French and Omaha Indian descent and had been a trader on the Missouri. He could speak the Omaha language and was skilled in sign language which was valuable for traveling through Indian lands. Though he was small, he was tough and had one eye. He possessed geographical knowledge and was an expert riverman. Cruzatte was able to entertain the other men in the crew with his energetic fiddle - playing. He often played key roles in communications with the various Indian tribes that the Corps encountered.

Spirit Mound is located in the midwest region near Vermillion, South Dakota and at 42.87N, 96.96W. Spirit Mound is a prairie area and an Indian burial ground. The crew saw many bison and birds flying over but no one really around. As a burial ground it covers a lot of land and is very important to the Indians that live near it.
Camp Dubois is located in the Midwest region near present day Wood River, Illinois and served as the Winter camp and starting point for the Lewis and Clark expedition. Located at 38.86, -90.11, Camp Dubois served as the first point of the expedition and Lewis and Clark left from the small camp.
