Exploration Option 1 - Top 5 things I learned from Ms. Saenz about legal and ethical concerns in regards to school counseling.

I chose to interview my current elementary school's counselor, Sylvia Saenz, and here are the top 5 things that I learned from her:
1. School counselors serve three different groups; students, parents, and teachers. Each group has its own legal and ethical guidelines that must be followed.
2. Staying current on legal and ethical guidelines by reading articles from different sources is important. Ms. Saenz specifically mentioned Education Week and Inside Higher Education as reputable sources.
3. In Ms. Saenz's experience as a school counselor, she has had the most problems with parents wanting to know exactly what their student in discussing with her. Saenz explained to me that parents often got upset when she would explain that the discussions were confidential and that legally she was unable to share.
4. There are several reasons why a school counselor has a legal obligation to share what a student has confided to them. These reasons are intent to harm others, intent to harm self, the student is being harmed by another, and subpoenaed in court.
5. The last and one of the most important things I learned from Saenz, is to always act in the best interest of the student. Personal feelings and beliefs need to be put to the side in all cases.

The topic that I chose discussed the ethical implications in regard to students and their online actions. Most students have access to technological devices like cell phones and computers at home. Also, many school districts are now pushing technology usage in the classroom for instructional purposes. This continuous access to online sources has led to many ethical questions being raised.

The journal article I read discussed cyberbullying and its rise across all age ranges. The article mentions that with the increased exposure to the internet, cyberbullying has become more prevalent and an increasing problem in schools.

The study in the article found that students were unaware of the moral implications of their online behavior toward other students. This problem can be solved by teachers and the school counselor working together to create guidance lessons that teach students online etiquette and appropriate internet behavior (Leduc, Conway, Gomez-Garibello, & Talwar, 2018).

The website article that I chose to read was also based on school aged children understanding the moral and ethical implications of their online behavior. In addition to cyber bullying, the article also touched upon plagiarism, copy right rules, and finding appropriate websites. Students need to be aware that copying the digital work of others is ethically wrong and can carry major consequences. The article only mentions the teacher’s role in helping students navigate the online world, but school counselors can also play a large rule in helping students understand how to act while online (McGilvery, 2012).

Both the journal article and the website article discussed the ethical dilemmas students face in their technology rich environments. The journal article focused mainly on cyberbullying and how students need to be taught that just because they are not saying it straight to an individual’s face that it is still hurtful. The website article focused on multiple different ethical issues that students face while in the classroom. Both articles discussed involving some type of guidance from the teacher, school counselor, or both.

                                                          References

Leduc, K., Conway, L., Gomez-Garibello, C., & Talwar, V.
