The players and the gambler who were involved were all held accountable. The players were banned from baseball. I believe that this is the right punishment for the players because they didn't do anything legally wrong, they just messed with the MLB. So this is why their punishment wasn't as severe other than the punishment by the MLB. This made them much worse the next season losing all of their good players. The gambler in this situation, Arnold Rothstein, was never caught for his involvement because of his death in 1928. They didn't get him before his death but he did quit betting after the scandal happened though. The White Sox were heavily favored so Rothstein wanted to bet against them. Knowing that if the White Sox ended up losing he would win a lot of money. So, he bet a total of $270,000 on the Cincinnati Reds to win the World Series, knowing that with the betting odds against the Reds the payout would be huge. The crime occured at the 1919 world series. The victim was the Cincinnati Reds which was the team playing against the white sox in the 1919 world series. The Reds won the world series because the other team wanted to lose.
