The children in this photo are severely struggling to survive. As you can see, they simply struggle to find the daily nutrition they need and necessities to an everyday life. With these kids being born into poverty, it is very hard for them to succeed in life because their lives are practically over before they even start.

John Deere employees came together and created a program called "Serving our employees." John Deere employees all over the world organize volunteer projects to help their cities and towns. This alone comes to about 17,000 hours of service. This program involved 5,300 employees at 40 different John Deere locations. Some of the projects that they put together include packaging meals, collecting cans of food for local food banks, planting gardens at local schools, packing backpacks with school supplies for at-risk children, helping farmers in developing countries be more productive, building houses through Habitat for Humanity, renovating schools, and picking up litter along beaches. These are just a few of the projects that employees put on at John Deere. These projects come together and help decrease poverty and help kids get what they need.

"Poverty doesn't give you the strength or teach you lessons about perseverance. No, poverty only teaches you how to be poor." (pg. 13)

This quote explains through Junior's eyes that living in poverty gives you nothing at all. You are left with no way of getting your everyday necessities, which only breaks you down instead of build you up.

"My parents came from poor people who came from poor people who came from poor people, all the way back to the very first poor people." (pg. 11)

This quote greatly represents the explanation for the picture provided. It is hard to succeed in life when being born into poverty, when your lives are practically over before they even start.

"Do you know the worst thing about being poor? oh, maybe you've done the math:
Poverty = empty fridge + empty stomach" (pg. 8)

This quote shows that living in poverty provides you without the basic needs that are needed to live. The picture of the kids are a good example of being starved in poverty to the point where you can die because of it.

"Junior sweetheart," mom said "I'm sorry but we don't have any money for Oscar."
So I heard the boom of my father's rifle when he shot my best friend. A bullet only costs about two cents, and anybody can afford that." (pg. 10 & 14)

These two quotes show that the only thing that Junior has to play with or entertain himself with is his dog, Oscar. Living in poverty he does not have the luxury of getting to play on a phone, computer, etc. He has his dog and only his dog and when you take that away because you can't afford to keep him alive, Junior is back left with nothing.

"But we reservation Indians don't get to realize our dreams. We don't get those dreams. Or choices. We're just poor. That's all we are." (pg. 13)

This quote explains that living poor gives you no choices in life. After Junior gets done explaining his parents dreams, he explains that when you're born into poverty you don't get a choice on where you go with your life. Your born poor you're stuck poor.
