In the beginning Auggie is described as timid. Auggie states "I sort of hide behind Mom as I walked. I know that sounds kind of babyish of me, but I wasn't feeling very brave right then" (Palacio,17). Auggie was feeling shy and alittle embaressed of his face so he hide behind his Mom and no one can see him. At the end of novel Auggie felt comfortable. Auggie states "...It kind of felt like everyone wanted to get close to me"( Palacio,308). This proves August has friends and isn't hiding. In the beginning of the novel Jack is expecting. Jack states "It's not just that he's a new kid,mom i answered. He's deformed" (Palacio,135). Jack dosent want to show Auggie around the school because he is different. At the end Jack is open minded. Auggie states about jack " What's your problem dude? said jack...Jack tried to push back Eddie" (Palacio,266). These sentances say Jack is sticking up for Auggie and is "fighting" for him. One theme that stands out is " When given the choice between being right or kind, choose kind" (Palacio,311). This theme means the right thing would be to do what everyone else is doing however the kind thing is to go out of your way to do or say something that might not be so easy. This relates to the novel because in Summers part she states "Some kids have actually come out and asked me why I hang out with the freak so much...Because he is a nice kid! I always answer and don't call him that" (Palacio,119). One day Summer came to sit with Auggie. It wasnt the "right thing" but it was the kind thing. Summer did what the theme said. He starts to go to school but has some challenges. It's present day in North River Hights, Beetcher Prep. His family and peers are Mom ,Dad ,Via ,Mr. Tushman,,Jack ,Julian ,Charlotte , and Daisy. August goes on a tour of the school with Charlotte,Jack,and Julian. One day Jack who became Auggies friend  makes fun of him behind his back and this affects their friendship. Jack was done with Julians behavior toward Auggie so he punches him which leads to him becoming friends with Auggie again. Later on Julian was not allowed to attend the Nature Retreat. Toward the end of the middle part of the novel Auggie and Jack are confronted by 7th graders from another school. He stands up for himself and Amos, Miles, Henry, and Jack stand up for him. After that the students were nicer to August. Auggie was in the office with Mr. Tushman he found out Julian got expelled. He also realized Mr. Tushman hung up his art photo. Auggie mostly had a great year. He made a bunch of friends and won the Henry B. award at graduation.
