i think this book may be banned from the shelves of a public library as it addresses the issue of sexuality, which may be very sensitive to some. furthermore, this book is targeted at kids, and parents may be hesitant, or even afraid to expose their children to such ideas that they may consider to be wayward or even wrong. so i think a public library may ban this book either due to their fear of members of the public rejecting its content, or the management itself having certain reservations about its content.

1) i learnt that there are a lot of ways i can communicate - not just using words (body storm!)
2) learning that there are a lot of ways that i can communicate also makes me concerned because i'm not sure that i'm doing all that in real life, though i would like to try to do so

i found these lines offensive because it seems that the narrator objectified his partners, and treated his relationships with them as if they were work relationships, purely meant to be "practical, ironical and brisk".
it appears as if he did not respect the women at all, as he describes them as having merely "sufficed" him.

- i think what is offensive about lolita is maybe the fact that humbert, lolita's step father, dares to lust over his stepchild, a 14 year old
- i think there are some qualities of humbert humbert that can be appreciated - eg. he has a lot of self-awareness, and doesn't try to hide the fact that he is attracted to lolita, a 14 year old girl (redeeming quality?)

when a writer chooses to write a controversial scene,
a. what does he gain?
- i think i would respect a writer that is able to portray a controversial scene with insight and perspective
b. what does he lose?
- however, at the same time, while some people may appreciate the newfound perspective, others may feel offended or insulted by it, and therefore the writer may lose some of his audience/support

i think the activity was quite in my comfort zone, and i think it was also very interesting because it really allowed me to understand the relationship between the characters more.
i think what i learnt about myself from the activity is that i usually prefer to take on more active roles (as compared to more passive roles) eg. be the doctor instead of the patient

what would make readers accept a controversial scene?

personally, i would accept a controversial scene if it makes me realise/sheds light on an issue or theme that i don't normally interact with, but i find would be good to know more about.
i think other readers may also be inclined to accept/not reject a controversial scene if they can learn something from it, or if they can relate to it/the characters portrayed in it, or because they appreciate the representation portrayed

i think books could be
- dangerous
- rewarding
- hated
- loved

book = fire ?
i think books are like fires, because some of them can be dangerous, especially if you are scared of them. some people may be very afraid of some fires, and will try to put them out as quickly as they can. yet fires also provide us with many functions, and allow us to cook, to gain warmth etc. we can gain a lot from fires, just like how we can take away a lot just from one book

today, faith & i presented our infographic on In the Night Kitchen !
we also watched other groups' presentations, and i think doing so also helped me to reinforce my concepts :-) eg. watching the "it takes two" presentation allowed me to consider other methods of expressing concepts that i'd never considered before
