Melinda started school as a loner and a mute. She gets bullied in school for what happened at the party, she also gets attacked by other students for snitching on the cops because of her getting raped. Nobody knew about what happened and she didn't tell anyone what happened either. That's why she Isolated herself and made herself be a shadow behind everyone, Just a regular face in the crowd trying not to get any unwanted attention on herself. Her rapist goes to the same highschool as her, Her life is going downhill after that night, She lost her best friends because of the action she took to call the police and cant go to anyone for help and not even her parents are able to help because she doesnt want them to find out. There is even proof when you read the book, on page 4 Melinda says ¨I am Outcast.¨ and another page on 104-105 the title is called Lunch Doom where Heather and Melinda are carrying out a conversation and they stumble on the topic of shopping, Melinda says¨I like to shop¨ and Heather replies to her saying ¨Ÿou dont like anything. You are the most depressed person ive met, excuse me for saying this, but you are no fun to be around and I think you need professional help.

During the duration of the book you are able to see Melinda change. She goes from being a happy go lucky kind of girl with nothing bad coming her way all the way to the party, And how it affects her and she goes through a kind of bad transformation. The party has scarred her and she wont forget about it, Keep in mind during the duration of the book and movie she is supposed to be around the age 14-15. Text that supports her change is on page 152, The title is called ¨Growing Pains¨ and by this she means that she the pain from the scarring of that night is growing and making things worse for her. In her Art class her teacher tells her to make a tree, The tree she paints changes through the book and he replies t her artwork by saying ¨You are getting better at this, But its not enough. This looks like a tree but it is an average, ordinary, everyday, boring tree. Breathe life into it. Make it blend--Trees are flexible, So they don't snap, Scar it, give it a Twisted Branch-- Perfect trees don't exist. Nothing is perfect, Flaws are interesting. Be the Tree.¨

The Two main themes I have found when reading the book Speak were Transformation and Isolation. These two things can happen to anyone in any way, Lets first talk about Transformation. What does Transformation mean? It means ¨A dramatic change in form or appearance¨ This can happen to anyone at any time, Not only can you change your appearance but you can change your way of thinking and your personality too. isolation can also happen to anyone where they purposely exclude themselves or people can exclude them from certain events and groups too, Its not a good nor healthy thing to be doing due to our brains wired to have social interaction.
