WHAT IS INQUIRY-BASED LEARNING?

Inquiry-based learning is when students learn through observations, experiences and questioning with open-ended questions. In IBL, students direct their own learning and teachers are "co-learners" in this process. (Capacity Building Series, 2013).

- For ELL students, teachers must facilitate discussions order to guide the students during inquiry.
- Vocabulary and grammatical structures must be reviewed and reused constantly by modelling it through instruction.
- In a study which observed inquiry-based learning to support newly arrived Chinese students showed that taking students on field trips gave students beneficial experiences that helped their learning. Students were able to observe and document on their own. (Shi, 2017).
- Groupings for group discussions have to be done intentionally, as ELL students may be uncomfortable to participate if they are not used to that type of setting.
- Student self-evaluation and teacher feedback is very important and the evaluations have to be based on tangible evidence from student's work.

How will I put theory into practice?

- In order to put inquiry-based learning into practice I hope to implement these strategies into place:
1. Getting to know the students and their learning needs.
- In inquiry based learning, group discussions are very common and therefore teachers need to figure out strategic groupings to best help each student. By getting to know your students, you can better understand what type of groupings are more comfortable. For some ELL students, depending on their cultural background and/or schooling prior to immigration could be a factor on whether or not they feel comfortable in a certain group.
- It is vital to get to know your students in order to know what type of learning environments are the best for them.
2. Scaffolding assignments for ELL students.
- Breaking down the assignment into multiple parts is a helpful way to support ELL students in an inquiry-based learning environment.
- Highlighting important vocabulary and giving examples to how students can approach their assignments.
3. Translanguaging
- ELL students should be given the opportunity to use their L1 and English interchangeably in order to help with their comprehension.

- In order to implement inquiry-based learning, I need to ensure that I can provide ELL students with resources tailored to their language needs, when they are trying to find answers to their questions.
- In terms of assessments, I would like to find a variety of ways to assess ELL students that allows them to utilize their L1 in the process.
- Give students more opportunities to reflect on their learning so they can be independent on revising their own work.
- Allow ELL students to take on leadership roles in inquiry based tasks by giving them the opportunity to utilize their prior knowledge and understanding of course content.

Example of an inquiry-based assignment: The Personal Project

- The use of personal projects can be helpful for ELL students specifically because they can highlight their interests and skills.
- Personal projects can be cross-curricular as well.
- The teacher can give the ELL students a planner in order to help with the planning process. In addition, the students can be given the chance to work with both their L1 and English.
- For projects in general, scaffolding can be done to assist ELL students to plan out their projects. (This is also an accommodation that is beneficial for ALL students).
