This involved not only managing the mocap equipment and troubleshooting any issues but also maintaining clear communication between team members to ensure that everyone understood the technical requirements and limitations.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>In the pre-production for project 1, my teammate and I focused on building a strong creative foundation. We started with brainstorming ideas to clarify the story we wanted to tell. This led us to scriptwriting, where we outlined the scenes, actions, and dialogue that would bring our vision to life.</p><p>After finalising the script, we moved on to storyboarding. This step was crucial, as it helped us visualise each scene, plan camera angles, and make sure the story flowed well. Storyboarding also allowed us to identify any technical challenges early, like specific movements or interactions that might be tricky to capture in mocap.</p><p>Character design was another big part of our pre-production. We searched online for the 3d modelling character that we want for character’s look, personality, and movement style. This process gave us a clear direction for how each character should act, which helped us later when we worked with actors in mocap.</p><p>Finally, we spent time on acting preparation. We rehearsed with our actors to ensure they understood the story, characters, and specific actions they’d need to perform. This helped them feel more comfortable with their roles and gave us confidence that the captured movements would match our creative vision.</p><p>Overall, pre-production was essential in setting up a successful project. By focusing on idea development, scriptwriting, storyboarding, character design, and acting preparation, we created a solid plan that made the mocap sessions run smoothly and allowed us to stay true to our original vision.</p>]]></description>

We shared our ideas and learned from each other, which improved our understanding of the project. My teammate had some great insights that made me think differently, and we clearly defined our roles for the work ahead. The open communication made it easy to share thoughts, and I left feeling excited and confident about our collaboration. Overall, it strengthened our teamwork and set a good path for the project.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Participating in the acting workshop was a valuable experience that gave me new insights into performance and character expression, both of which are essential in animation. The workshop allowed me to understand how an actor brings emotion and personality to a character through body language, facial expressions, and timing. Seeing this process firsthand was eye-opening, as it made me realize how much thought goes into even the smallest movements.</p><p>One of the most useful parts of the workshop was learning how to break down a character’s emotions and motivations. We practiced getting into the mindset of different characters, which helped me understand how an actor connects with their role. This approach showed me that effective acting isn’t just about delivering lines; it’s about fully inhabiting the character's thoughts and feelings. I can see how this skill directly translates into animation, where animators need to convey the same depth of character without spoken words.</p><p>The workshop also emphasized the importance of physicality. We explored different postures, gestures, and ways to use space to create distinct personalities. I learned that even small changes in posture or gesture can convey a lot about a character’s personality and emotional state. This understanding will definitely help me as an animator, where capturing realistic and expressive movements is key to bringing characters to life.</p><p>Overall, the acting workshop was a valuable experience that helped me appreciate the connection between acting and animation. It showed me how much thought goes into creating believable characters, and I’m excited to apply these acting principles to my animation work, making my characters feel more authentic and alive.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The production phase of our motion capture project was an exciting and eye-opening experience, especially since it was my first time working with this technology. While I was nervous at first, the process turned out to be a great learning opportunity thanks to my team and the help of an experienced assistant.  </p><p><br/></p><p>The session began with setting up the motion capture system. This included putting on the motion capture suit, attaching markers, and calibrating the cameras. We need an actor to get their suit up first. It was amazing to see how these small markers tracked every movement. Although I didn’t fully understand everything at first, the assistant guided us step by step, making it easier to follow.  I learned how even small adjustments, like properly aligning markers, could significantly impact the quality of the capture.    </p><p><br/></p><p>The assistant was a huge help during the session. They gave clear instructions on how to set up the equipment and how to direct the actor. They also showed us how certain movements, like exaggerating small gestures, could make the performance stand out in the captured data. This made the process much easier to manage, especially for someone new like me. Besides, watching the actor's live movements being translated into digital data in real time was incredible, and it reinforced my appreciation for the blend of artistry and technology in animation.  </p><p><br/></p><p>In addition to learning how to capture the data, we were introduced to Unreal Engine and MotionBuilder. These tools are critical for processing and refining motion capture data. The assistant demonstrated how to import the captured performance into MotionBuilder, clean up the data, and prepare it for animation.</p><p><br/></p><p>Unreal Engine added another layer of excitement, as it allowed us to visualize the captured motion in a real-time 3D environment. Seeing the actor’s performance come to life through a virtual character in Unreal was a powerful moment and gave me a glimpse of how motion capture integrates with modern animation pipelines.</p><p><br/></p><p>As a beginner, we did face some challenges, like markers falling off or the system losing track of movements. At first, I wasn’t sure how to handle these problems, but the assistant showed us how to fix them quickly and keep going and trying. These moments taught me a lot about staying calm and solving problems during production.  </p><p><br/></p><p>The session also showed me how important teamwork is. Each person had a role, whether it was monitoring the system, helping the actor, or fixing issues. With the assistant’s guidance, we worked together smoothly and kept the session on track.  </p><p><br/></p><p>This being my first motion capture experience, I learned a lot about how the process works. It was fascinating to see how performance is captured and turned into animation. I also realized how much collaboration and problem-solving are needed to make everything run smoothly.  </p><p><br/></p><p>This overall experience also highlighted the importance of teamwork. Each member had a role to play, from managing the capture software to assisting the actor. With the assistant's clear direction, we were able to coordinate smoothly and support one another. It was rewarding to see how our combined efforts contributed to a successful session. </p><p><br/></p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>For the next day we were given the responsibility to operate the system independently. This progression from being learners to taking charge of the process was both challenging and rewarding, leaving me with valuable insights about motion capture and teamwork.  </p><p><br></p><p>On the first day, the assistant played a key role in helping us understand the setup and operation of the motion capture system. They showed us how to calibrate the cameras, attach markers to the suit, and monitor the system for any issues. Their detailed instructions made what initially seemed like a complicated process much more approachable. It was a relief to have someone guide us through potential problems, such as markers not tracking or calibration errors, which helped us focus on learning instead of stressing over mistakes.  </p><p><br></p><p>The assistant also gave us tips on directing the actor to ensure the performance was captured effectively. For example, they explained how small movements might not always be picked up, so exaggerating gestures could make the animation more accurate. Watching the live capture of the actor’s movements being translated into data was both fascinating and inspiring, and it motivated me to understand the system better.  </p><p><br></p><p>So, for the next day, we were asked to manage the motion capture session on our own. This was both exciting and intimidating. Without the assistant’s immediate guidance, we had to rely on what we had learned the day before. Setting up the equipment, calibrating the cameras, and ensuring the markers were properly aligned now felt like a test of our understanding. </p><p> </p><p>At first, there was some hesitation as we double-checked every step, but gradually, we became more confident. When we encountered problem like the system losing tracking, we had to think on ourselves. Using the troubleshooting techniques taught by the assistant, we were able to solve these issues without disrupting the session.  </p><p><br></p><p>Working without the assistant emphasized how important teamwork was in making the production run smoothly. Each of us took on specific roles, from monitoring the capture feed to assisting the actor or fixing technical issues. This division of responsibilities allowed us to stay organized and make the best use of our time.  </p><p><br></p><p>The session also helped us grow as a team. Without relying on the assistant, we learned to communicate more effectively and support each other. Whether it was reminding someone about the calibration steps or suggesting solutions for tracking errors, we worked together to ensure the session was a success.  </p><p><br></p><p>Completing the session independently was incredibly rewarding. Seeing the performance data we captured and knowing we had done it on our own felt like a major achievement. It was also a confidence boost, showing me how much I had learned in just a short amount of time.  </p><p><br></p><p>This experience taught me that hands-on learning and practice are the best ways to build confidence with new technology. It also showed me the importance of being adaptable and staying calm when things go wrong. Most importantly, I learned that teamwork is essential in motion capture production. There is no one person can do it all alone.  </p><p><br></p><p>In general, transitioning from being guided to working independently was a challenging but empowering process. I’m proud of how my team and I managed the session, and I look forward to applying these skills to future projects. This experience has given me a strong foundation to continue exploring the exciting world of motion capture.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>After completing the offline performance capture and retargeting process, we had a consultation with our lecturer to reflect on the work and discuss any areas for improvement. The meeting was really helpful and gave me valuable feedback on both the technical and creative aspects of the project.</p><p>We started by talking about the motion capture session itself. We explained that we had encountered some issues with some glitching parts movements and inaccuracies in the data, which required a fair amount of cleanup. My lecturer highlighted the importance of thoroughly cleaning the data, as even small errors can become more noticeable during the retargeting stage.</p><p>We then moved on to the retargeting process. I’d applied the captured data to a test character, but there were some concerns about the alignment between the motion data and the rig. My lecturer suggested to pay closer attention to the character’s proportions and make further adjustments to ensure the movements felt natural. We also discussed how keyframe timing needed some refinement to make the movement more fluid, particularly with the hands and facial expressions.</p><p>Another point we touched on was the emotional aspect of the performance. While the motion capture was technically accurate, my lecturer encouraged me to think more about how the character’s personality and emotions should come through in the retargeted movement. It made me realise that even in a technical process like this, the emotional depth of the performance should remain a priority.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>After completing the offline performance capture and retargeting process for this project, I’ve had a chance to reflect on the progress we made and the areas we need to improve. Working with my lecturer’s guidance, I gained a better understanding of how to refine the motion capture data to enhance the emotional storytelling and technical accuracy of the animation. This experience highlighted both the creative and technical aspects of performance animation and it gave me a clearer sense of how to push the project further.</p><p>One of the first things that stood out after reviewing the captured performance was how much subtlety is required to fully convey the emotional journey of our character. While the raw motion data provided a realistic base, it didn’t always capture the depth of emotions that we wanted. Our lecturer advised us to focus on refining the timing and gestures, small changes like adjusting the speed of arm movements or adding a slight tremble can make a big difference in showing fear. This was a great reminder that even with performance capture, animators need to be intentional about enhancing the performance for clarity and impact.</p><p>The retargeting process was another key learning point. Transferring motion data from the performer to the 3D character presented some technical challenges, especially since the proportions of the performer and the character didn’t match perfectly. Some joints didn’t move quite as expected, which made parts of the animation look stiff or awkward. Our lecturer’s advice to pay close attention to weight distribution and balance really helped here. By tweaking the rotations of certain bones and adjusting the placement of the feet, we were able to make Anon’s movements feel more grounded and natural. This taught me the importance of making fine adjustments and not relying solely on the automated retargeting tools.</p><p>One thing that I found particularly helpful was to think about exaggeration. While motion capture captures realistic movement, animation often benefits from pushing the performance beyond realism to emphasize emotions. In this project, when Anon finds the pen and begins to draw on the floor, it’s a pivotal moment where wonder and curiosity take over. To enhance this moment, our lecturer suggested exaggerating the timing and adding more deliberate, precise hand motions. These adjustments will make Anon’s discovery feel more magical and memorable, drawing the viewer deeper into her story.</p><p>Lastly, one of the biggest takeaways was the importance of iteration. Animation isn’t perfect on the first attempt, and going back to review and tweak the performance is part of the process. Our lecturer encouraged us to step back and watch the animation from different angles to catch any inconsistencies or missed opportunities for refinement. Moving forward, I take note all of the advice that given by my lecturer to improve on this project.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>In this day, we make another mocap session and it was so many challenges that we encountered. Unlike the first session, this time we encountered significant difficulties during the calibration process, which tested our problem-solving skills and patience. The main issue was that the OptiTrack cameras had trouble detecting the wand, which is a crucial step for calibrating the system. Despite following the usual procedure, the cameras wouldn’t properly track the wand’s movement, making it impossible to complete the calibration efficiently.</p><p>This unexpected challenge slowed us down and caused some frustration, but it also reinforced the importance of flexibility and teamwork in a production environment. Thankfully, Mr. Lincoln, our technician was incredibly helpful and played a vital role in resolving the issue. With his expertise, he quickly diagnosed potential causes, such as adjusting camera positioning and ensuring the wand’s reflective markers were clean and correctly aligned. And thanks to my lecturer that she guided us through troubleshooting steps, like recalibrating individual cameras and checking for obstructions in the capture volume. Her calm and methodical approach reminded us how valuable it is to stay composed and analytical when faced with technical setbacks.</p><p>Reflecting on this session, I realized how much preparation and maintenance go into ensuring smooth motion capture sessions. Even with advanced technology, things can and do go wrong, and having skilled technicians on hand makes a huge difference. Additionally, this experience emphasized the importance of understanding the equipment thoroughly, so that in future situations, we can troubleshoot more effectively on our own.</p><p>Despite the initial delays, we were able to complete the session successfully, and it was a valuable learning experience. It taught me not only technical problem-solving skills but also the importance of teamwork, patience, and adaptability. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Our final meeting before the submission was focused on finalising all the project requirements and ensuring that everything was in place for a successful delivery. This session was critical for reviewing each component of the project and making sure that all technical, creative, and presentation elements aligned with the expectations outlined at the beginning. Reflecting on this meeting, I realized how much preparation and attention to detail are necessary to complete a project of this scale.</p><p>One of the main goals was to confirm that all deliverables were completed and ready for submission. We reviewed the final animation to ensure that it met both the creative vision and technical specifications. This included checking for smooth transitions, believable motion from the performance capture data, and a clear emotional arc for our character, Anon. We also verified that the file formats, frame rates, and render settings met the required standards. Attention to these details gave us confidence that the technical side of our project would run smoothly during the presentation.</p><p>One of my key contributions to this project was handling the technical aspects, which involved working with the motion capture system and retargeting data to our character. During this meeting, I revisited the technical components to confirm that the animation ran smoothly without any glitches. This included ensuring that the motion capture data was properly cleaned and refined, that transitions between movements were seamless, and that there were no issues with character deformation. It was rewarding to see how the final animation reflected the careful adjustments we made to enhance realism and storytelling.</p>]]></description>
