European starlings

European starlings are a highly invasive blackbird found across nearly all of the United States and up into Canada! They're very beneficial in their natural regions due to their diets of harmful pests such as wireworms, but in the US, they're doing lots of damage to native bird populations via competition. They are also a danger to aircrafts and drive many native birds out of their habits, and ruining soil balances with their droppings as well, due to their massive roost sizes, sometimes up to 1.5 Million birds all flocking together. Yeah, that's right. 1.5 million birds.

Starlings have been mentioned many times in old literature, in everything from Shakespeare to King Henry IV's writings. This is because they were very common pets in Europe, second only to pigeons.

They were introduced multiple times in Quebec and New York in 1890, some speculation citing the reason for their introduction being a group that wanted to introduce all of the birds from Shakespeare's plays into the forming country. Though this is likely untrue speculation, I still think it's the most interesting explanation into why they were introduced. :P
