Any veteran interested in routine eye screening is eligible. A trained ophthalmology technician is stationed in a community-based outpatient clinic. The technician follows a detailed protocol that collects information about the patient's eyes, and the information is interpreted remotely at the Atlanta VA Eye Clinic. Patients are checked for eyeglasses and screened for common eye diseases using special equipment and eye photographs. Patients with possible abnormal findings are scheduled for an in-person examination at the main clinic. Evidence shows there is a >90% agreement between the TECS reading and the face-to-face findings of the physician. It allows veterans to receive routine eye screenings and eyeglass fittings, while referring those who need comprehensive care to the appropriate source.
