The seriousness of her country's situation causes her to mature faster than other children. In the beginning of the book, many panels show her imagination and how she pictures events in the world.  As she gets older we see her views on the world become more realistic. She becomes her own independent person with her own values. One panel showed Marji saying " I will always be true to myself"(Satrapi 151/2). In our community we have the freedom to practice any religion of our choosing, but in Marji's community only one type of religion is enforced on all people. No matter your personal beliefs, one must follow all rules of religion in Marji's community to avoid severe punishment.
