The Summer of Love was a yearlong hippie movement that was set to start on the summer solstice in the summer of 1967. Most hippies were younger generations fed up with the violence of war and hoped their forms of protest would change America and create peace. These young Americans were full of hope for a better future and had a hard time waiting for the solstice so most events pertaining to the Summer of Love were carried out throughout the year. These ideas of love and peace spread throughout the country, especially in larger cities. Hippies gathered in large numbers in different parts of the country and celebrated peace and love. Many of these gatherings involved music and other forms of art. These gatherings also had a large number of drugs being used like LSD and marijuana. Hippies believed these mind-altering drugs helped them see the truest forms of themselves and created a higher idea of love and unity.
