Postmodernism in literature encourages us to look at the meaning and representations of something in a novel, and question whether what we read is true or untrue, and whether it is absolute in its meaning or not.
There is no objectivity in the concept of Postmodernism at all. This concept is only tied in with subjectivity. Postmodernism chooses random meanings attached to ideas and realities as opposed to having absolute meanings. This allows individuals to question the meaning behind certain events and realities. This concept is perpetuated in literature with the use of unreliable and several narrators. This is depicted in Atonement when we have Briony as a narrator and she is described as having as vivid and active imagination. This drives readers to go back and look at the novel and realize that what they took as having one meaning or reality, meant something else. This concept is shown in Atonement when we reach the ending. What we took as the story of two lovers making their way back to each other was shown to be untrue. One way of doing so is by 'breaking the fourth wall in literature'. This is done by having the character in the novel addressing the reader directly. Yet another method of using metafiction is the narrator commenting on the story whilst the story is taking place. The first manner in which metafiction is used is by having Briony address the reader at the end of the novel. 
The second manner in which metafiction is depicted in Atonement os by having Biony write and want to perform a play that she has written. This method maintains metafiction rules by having one story within another story. 
The last manner in which metafiction is depicted in the novel is by having two versions of events describing the same timeline. This is seen when we reach the end of the novel and we are shocked to find out that the two lovers Robbie and Cecelia never received their chance of a reunion.
