What figures of speech are used? How do they contribute to the tone and meaning of the poem?

In her poem, Emily Dickinson uses a figure of speech to greater emphasize her reclusivity. She paints the picture of "an Emperor be kneeling", but the soul doesn't care. This idea of picking who you are is a contrary thought to many in this time period; Dickinson appears herself to be the soul in this passage. She shows that she doesn't care who it is, she wished to be left alone in life. This theme is perfectly portrayed by the "closing of the valves of attention like stone", as she slams the doors on everyone as well. I know I wouldn't want to be alone like that!

How important is the contribution of form, such as rhyme scheme and line arrangement? How does form influence the overall effect of the poem?

In her poem, Dickinson's use of rhyme scheme and structure changes the way we view the narration of this piece. The initial rhymes create a more happy introduction, but the uses of hyphens builds suspense as the poem continues. A more serios mood develops as "Unmoved — she notes the Chariots — pausing —". Dickinson separates the phrases, almost as though wanting to pause at each important word. The personal poem forces emphasis on all parts, while maintaining a word flow. It is this style of writing that gives the potent literary masterpiece its drama.
