In the beginning of the book, Annemarie is a really unaware (naive) of what is going on around her. She and her friends don't understand why the soldiers are on the street corners and isn't aware of the real danger coming. As the Nazi's enforce their "relocation" plan, it becomes quite clear to Annemarie that her friend Ellen, and anyone that is Jewish, is in terrible danger. Annemarie shows her bravery by helping Ellen hide, taking off her stare of david necklace when the soldiers came to her house , and taking the mysterious item hidden in the basket to her Uncle Henrik.
