In last week's lesson 3, we were given the task, as a group to convince an audience to care about a certain topic through techniques that the teachers chose. The topic was that "52% of turtles had consumed plastic globally". From this, our classes were divided into groups of 4-5, I went with Kate, Vanessa and Gurman. In our group, we were given the technique "anecdote". From this, we made our pitch centred on drawing the audience's sympathy and tugging at their heartstrings with a story about a turtle couple where the wife dies due to plastic being thrown overboard by a ship crowded with people.

We demonstrated communication, collaboration and creative and critical thinking through this task by working effectively as a group, brainstorming unique ideas, creating an intriguing slideshow and delivering an emotional pitch which induced a sense of empathy from the audience. In this task, through communication and my leadership, roles were assigned such as me being the pitcher and gurman making the slideshow whereas Kate and Vanessa brainstormed ideas. Because of this, we functioned like a well-oiled machine as everyone had their focus and goal to work towards, so nobody was slacking. Due to this efficient work ethic and following the 5 c's, we were able to create a pitch that evoked emotions in the crowd.

In this lesson, we were introduced to our spin-off project which was to identify a current problem in our local councils (city of Burnside) and work with groups to brainstorm various unique ways to solve this problem using Divergent and Convergent thinking. The teachers had selected us to be in random groups to complete this spin-off project and I was paired with Jack and Adnoi. At first, I couldn’t come up with that many ideas as Burnside is a fairly privileged area so I started thinking more broadly and found issues related to inflation such as lowering the price of the canteen so students don’t have to pay so much for lunch (example of divergent thinking). At this point, we weren’t thinking that concretely about one topic, bouncing off of each other's ideas and creating a diverse range of solutions for an array of problems in our community. This quick-fire idea creation stimulated our creative thinking greatly, allowing us to be open-minded and creative as the lesson was solely focused on idea creation, so the sky was the limit because we didn’t have to choose a problem yet.

Week 2 was the start of another Design-thinking activity in which we had to explain our experiences during lunch and collaborate and communicate to solve another's problems within their experiences during lunch.

First, I wrote about my own lunch experience on a timeline, including the aspects that I appreciated and the aspects that I was not that satisfied with. From there, I switched our lunch experience time with others at the table and shared details on why we enjoyed and disliked lunchtime.

From there, I partnered up with India and we began an empathy map, which I found helpful in assisting how I reflected upon the problems in Kate's lunch experience as well as making it easier for me to view the situation from Kate's perspective, allowing more insight and better understanding. Moreover, it allows a greater importance to be brought on the aspect of empathy, which is vital to solving any problem. This task allowed me to broaden my scope of thinking and explore different solutions and perspectives, to further emphasise with my client and improve my communication with my partner. Throughout this process, I found myself becoming more innovative and ambitious with the solutions I had brought to the discussion. From these discussions, we found four final solutions to Kate's problems that had their constraints and positive gains, and chose to display it in a coggle.

When I was introduced to this task, I wasn't as interested in it however, the process of working through solving someone did spark my interest. This was because engaged both creative and critical thinking through being open-minded to a variety of different solutions that were realistic enough to be implemented in daily life. Moreover, It also improved my communication skills as I had to communicate and discuss Kate's problems with my partner India.

In this lesson, Jack, Adonai and I further expanded on the brainstorming we did last lesson to find the problem that we wanted to focus on for our final project. In the end, the problem that our community struggled with that we decided to solve was the abundance of rubbish and litter scattered throughout the areas of Burnside and Unley. We identified and discussed how because of this litter infestation, our communities had looked unkept and uncared for. This process of identifying problems and potential solutions utilized creative thinking and critical thinking.

Jack had started a Google doc to quickly write down all of our ideas and our brainstorming. From there, Adnoi suggested running an app for rubbish collection where students can register it and have profit given by the government for helping their community. As well as this, it could be a place where information about the detrimental effects of littering and litter is provided. However, the teachers had warned about how apps can become tedious, especially because everyone has so many apps on their phones already. From this, I took the initiative (leadership) to steer the conversation in a different direction and used SCAMPER. Rather than being an app, it was modified to be a program implemented in schools that was both applicable to real life and online. This involved divergent thinking as we needed to come up with multiple solutions or alterations rather then solely focusing on an app like we were doing prior. Throughout this process, we had to be open-minded and creative with our ideas, which I think is why our discussions were so beneficial.

SCAMPER brainstorming process developed my Creative thinking skills as it challenged me to experiment and alter the ideas that we came up with and stay open-minded to come up with a potential solution that didn't already exist. A part of SCAMPER that challenged me but also made me use divergent thinking was substitute. Orginally, we had wanted to make Tergeo an app, but with apps being so common and not that unique in terms of ideas, we used divergent thinking and subsited the app to be a program. The idea of a program implemented into schools was far more original than our first idea of an app, and helped our solution be more unique.

We finalized the idea to be a litter collection-focused program, involving active contribution towards helping the environment through id- recognizing bins, which recorded the amount of rubbish collected by a person and linked it towards their account on a website (Tergeo). The website also worked to inform users about litter and its detrimental effects. From this, we began planning the script for the infomercial and discussed how we could make it engaging and informative about the solution we’re trying to pitch. We thought that a beginning that emotionally evoked urgency and slight sadness (pathos) would be suitable when talking about the pollution caused by litter as it pulls at the audience’s heartstrings and grasps their attention swiftly.

After that, we implemented contrast with a quick shift to a more upbeat, chatty style of narration when introducing our solution, which subconsciously painted it in a friendly, positive light. This contrast between the scene without our solution (serious voice-over, black and white filter, emotional piano) and with our filter (upbeat background noise, chatty voice-over, colorful) painted the idea in our audiences’ minds that the solution would make the world that much better of place, which was our goal. Throughout this process, we had to communicate and collaborate to complete our portion of the script as well as the other roles, where I was given the task to record and edit.

The logo was inspired by nature and the name Tergeo was inspired by the Latin phrase relating to "clean/cleanse", which embodied our goal to clean up the rubbish around our areas.

Filming our infomercial was a challenge; all of the groups had members running around so it was difficult to find a place where we could settle without getting interrupted by another group filming. Because of this, we decided to film in various locations, which worked towards our benefit as it gave us multiple bins to film in our video. After some discussion, we agreed that I could do a voice-over along with Jack as our portions of the script were far longer compared to Adnoi’s. At first, Adnoi had struggled with memorizing the script so instead of just reading the script beforehand and trying to say what he could remember, I positioned the script right outside the phone camera’s view so that it couldn’t be captured in the video yet could still be read by Adnoi. Because of this quick and creative thinking, there were far fewer stuttering and awkward pauses when Adnoi was recorded speaking.

After filming our infomercial, I was given the task of editing and brainstorming what I could do to benefit from the effectiveness of the whole video. From this, I decided to further emphasize the contrast between the beginning (where we talked about the problem) and the end (where we talked about our solution) with the use of filters. For example, as we wanted the audience to emphasize our goal of getting rid of litter, we spoke about how it harms animals and the environment. To further pull on the viewer’s heartstrings, I used a black-and-white filter in that segment, making the situation appear more depressing and sullen, which is only exemplified by the emotional piano in the background. Because of this effect, the audience would feel more upset towards the problem and more willing to provide/be a part of the solution. In contrast, the rest had color and was upbeat. This role as editor let me explore how simple editing alterations can shift the mood of the viewers as well as furthering my creative thinking.

In today's lesson, we were discussing problems that we could potentially focus on with a heavy emphasis on writing as many problems as we could down. This could range on any topic that we truly cared about, and had engaged our creative and critical thinking. We decided to display our brainstorming on a jam board. Most of our problems had a general audience of possibly anyone but problems such as school debt were focused towards school students and lack of parking was targeted towards those who own a car (mostly employed adults). As a whole, most problems were centred around decreasing climate change. Empathy was key in this problem brainstorming as we had to think about problems that affect everyone, even if we personally never experienced them.

When we finished everyone's community problem-based infomercials, we were given the task of discussing problems across the globe that we could possibly solve. This task allowed me to become more open-minded, and better educated regarding problems that I don't personally go through, emphasise better with other people's issues as well as develop the 5C's. Furthermore, it allowed me to explore topics and problems I was passionate about. The lesson began with identifying passion, and also defining it. I defined passion as a nearly controllable urge or extremely strong desire to push a cause or to achieve a certain goal, which was influenced by watching a video breaking down the definition of passion.

For me, passion lends me to be the most ambitious version of myself. With this mindset in place, we reflected back upon our responses to what we were passionate about. However, I also noticed that passion is broader than just caring about dire global situations like war or global hunger, someone can also be passionate about seemingly minor things like a hobby, a place or an activity like swimming. This caused a minor inconvenience to me as I didn't know whether to start with my passions regarding more trivial problems or my passions regarding global issues like poverty.

To start our idea-generating process, Catapult Cards were introduced and assisted in critically assessing and identifying possible small and big problems that inconvenienced us in our daily lives. I started with a card regarding elderly people as I first believe that there are plenty of problems that they experience which aren't given any care or regard for. Furthermore, by putting myself in their shoes, I was able to emphasise further their struggles which were unlike my own. As well as this, it allowed me to explore my passion of helping people.

BRAIN-STORMING SOLUTIONS [INOV8/ TASK 2}

In this lesson, we did a round robin where we had to write about our top solutions to the problems that we brainstormed last lesson on individual post-it notes. We focused on Homelessness and the lack of parking. Creating and writing down our solutions that were both easy to implement and not pre-existing challenged my creative and critical thinking as it forced me to think far more divergetly while also having to be slightly realistic. Additionally, it improved my communication skills because we had to have open-minded discussions as a group regarding possible solutions. After that, we traded ideas with a different group and had to think of ways in which their ideas could fail, this implemented my critical thinking as I had to question and challenge whether or not their ideas could be effectively applied in society. After that, we were given another different group's ideas and had to solve their criticisms, which demonstrated creative thinking as we had to come up with solutions to the flaws in their ideas.

Finally, we placed our solutions in a how, wow matrix which helped establish how creative and viable our solutions were. All in all, this task helped broaden my idea thought process to be more open-minded, divergent and creative while brainstorming. As well as this, it also strengthened my critical thinking skills and communication skills.

Extra research - looking at problems faced by the elderly

Additional research shows that elderly people face a range of problems regarding their social, financial, physical and mental state.

Approximately 15% of adults aged 60 and over suffer from a mental disorder (world health organization, 2023).

These mental disorders include:

Cognitive decline, including Alzheimer's and dementia

Depression

Anxiety

Sleep disorders

Substance abuse

Personality disorders, which can increase in symptoms as one age

Other problems include:

Interpersonal and Institutional ageism

Heart disease

Diabetes

Hearing loss

Loneliness

Statistics

-> Roughly 1 in 3 older adults over age 65 are economically insecure, with incomes below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL).

->61% of households headed by those 65 or older had debt in 2016. The median debt of senior-led households was $31,050.

From researching this article, I was able to comprehend the severity of the problems that elderly people went through. Before this, I would skim over the problems as they didn't harm me or the people I was close to. Subsequently, this article developed and deepened my understanding and empathy. This had linked to my passion of helping people, and it inspired me to come up with solutions that may prevent these problems from unfolding.

WEEK 11 - CHARADES/ COMMUNICATION CHALLENGE

In this lesson, we were given the task of conveying a sentence without using words or verbally and instead, using movements.

This helped us explore communication and collaboration through our discussions about what movements to portray the sentence "exploring a haunted house" to the guesser within the group of actors.

Additionally, it also explores nonverbal communication when we present information through our actions to the guesser who has to understand what we are conveying. This was shown when Indiah had to guess the sentence that we (me, Vanessa and Gurman) were acting out. (example of conveying a message).

The highlight was that we used a nod to display if Indiah got it correct or not. This helped give confirmation, so she could quickly move on. This task employed creative and critical thinking to come up with my actions and improved my communication and collaboration with others. If I were to attempt this task again, I would not stick to one action if the guesser doesn't get any information from it and I would use more improvisation and creative thinking.
