Considering how so many rape and sexual assault cases have been written off as with statements like "she wanted it", it is unsurprising that of the 40% of sexual assault cases that are reported, only one-third of the cases have any punishment attached to them. There are many accusations of Weinstein demanding sexual favors from women in exchange for casting, or other forms of aid in the industry. This type of blackmail is unfortunately very comman in the industry. In fact, Weinstein spoke about his upbringing and stated, "I came of age in the 60's and 70's, when all the rules about behavior and workplaces were different. That was the culture then". Seeing his deviance not result in any sanctions either publicly or privately can explain why he continued to do these deviant actions: he learned from the people he abused that he could harass these women and nothing bad would happen to him. This neutralization technique applies to Harvey Weinstein because he spent a lot of time and money trying to keep his actions quiet, and never admitted that he actually committed any of his deviant acts. Shortly after many of these accusations against him went public, Weinstein gave an interview to the New York Post where he said he has overseen "more movies directed by women and about women than any film-maker", and he said "I pioneered it! It all got eviscerated because of what happened. My work has been forgotten".
