The Cabin Mystery — Part Two

Greg screamed.

Not a heroic scream. Not even a respectable one. It was high-pitched, panicked, and ended with his voice cracking like a dying kazoo.

“OKAY—” he yelled, pointing wildly at the walls, “—I TAKE IT BACK. THIS IS NOT FUN.”

The cabin exhaled again. The sound came from everywhere and nowhere, like a thousand old men sighing in unison.

Amy grabbed Greg by the hoodie. “YOU DID THIS. I DON’T KNOW HOW, BUT I KNOW IT WAS YOU.”

“I can barely commit to homework,” Greg cried. “You think I can commit to a SENTIENT CABIN?!”

The shadowy figure let out a wheezing laugh, the kind that sounded like it needed cough syrup and therapy. “Oh, children… blaming each other already? That didn’t take long.”

Sylvia squinted at it. “Why do villains always talk like they’re hosting a dinner party?”

The figure paused.

“…I do enjoy hosting,” it said defensively.

The two staircases creaked. One oozed downward into pitch darkness, the other glowed faintly red, like a toaster coil that had opinions.

Amy crossed her arms. “Let me guess. One staircase eats us alive and the other—”

“—also eats you alive,” the figure finished cheerfully. “But in a different way.”

“Wow,” Greg muttered. “Options.”

The floor suddenly tilted, forcing them toward the stairs.

“NOPE,” Amy shouted, grabbing a nearby beam. “I REFUSE TO DIE VIA STAIRS.”

Sylvia’s eyes darted around. “Guys… does anyone else notice the walls are… closer?”

Greg looked behind him. The walls were inching inward, wood groaning like it was stretching after a nap.

“Oh cool,” he said weakly. “The cabin is crushing us. That’s new.”

The figure clapped. Actual clapping. Its hands made a wet sound. “You’re catching on! The cabin reshapes itself based on fear. Screaming really helps.”

Amy slapped a hand over Greg’s mouth. “DO. NOT. SCREAM.”

“MMPH—”

A loud BANG echoed as a door appeared behind them out of nowhere, slamming into existence.

Everyone froze.

Sylvia slowly turned. “That’s… new.”

The figure leaned closer, its smile stretching even further. “Ah. The exit.”

Amy’s eyes lit up. “SEE? WE WIN. WE LEAVE. YOU LOSE. THE END.”

The figure laughed again, sharp and delighted. “Oh no. That’s not the exit.”

Greg peeled Amy’s hand off his face. “Please tell me that’s the real door.”

“Oh it is,” the figure said. “For one of you.”

Silence slammed down harder than the cabin walls.

Sylvia swallowed. “One… of us?”

The door creaked open slowly, revealing blinding white light and the faint sound of birds—real birds. Outside. Freedom.

Amy backed away immediately. “Nope. No sacrifices. Absolutely not.”

The figure shrugged. “The cabin needs a replacement. Someone has to stay behind… so the rest may leave.”

Greg laughed nervously. “Haha… wow… that’s messed up.”

The door began to close.

“Oh COME ON!” Greg shouted.

The cabin shook violently.

“DECIDE,” the figure screeched, its voice suddenly echoing from every wall. “OR THE CABIN CHOOSES.”

The lights flickered. The walls surged inward again.

Sylvia looked at Amy. Amy looked at Greg.

Greg looked at both of them.

“…Okay,” he said slowly, “before anyone says anything—statistically—”

“DON’T,” Amy snapped.

The floor cracked beneath their feet.

Outside, the light dimmed.

The cabin inhaled.

And somewhere deep in its walls, something whispered a name.
