the man stepped into a circle, as fluid as water and whirled his sword over his head. his movements were precise and sharp, indicating years and years of training that led to perfection. blood, sweat and tears had been spilt to get to where he was but for some reason, no matter what he did, nothing ever appeased the demons in his mind.

and that was precisely the issue; sometimes, they took over a bit too much, too loud, too cruel that he dropped his guard.

the blade slid over the palm of his hand, nicking his skin in a curved line. he stopped immediately, looking down at the rubies that dotted his palm before melting into rivulets of crimson. pain did not register, it never did after that incident but he was at least glad that it was something he felt. for if he did not feel pain, there was nothing that would stop guilt from swallowing him whole.

With a love of whiskey and filled with loneliness, Dongwook often finds himself in company that are flowery. They are all beautiful, filling the gardens of every gisaeng house with blossoms of grace and laughter but out of that bunch, a thorny rose always stands out to him. 

She smells of moonlight and rose dipped whiskey, lingering on his skin after a night under the moon. Their friendship stems from that night, but over time, it develops into something akin to comfort, one that fits within the silk sheets and in their lives as if puzzle pieces. It’s a transaction of benefits and Dongwook has no qualms about becoming all too familiar with the walls of her bedroom.

this is an emotionally heavy plot, one that is very close to my heart and i require my partner to be as invested in this as i am. this plot actually starts from years ago, when Dongwook was still very young which means that there will be constant planning and discussion and i expect actual writing when it comes to development and background. so please please please be very serious if you are interested.

you're bright as the morning, as soft as the rain, pretty as a vine, as sweet as a grape and there was no way, come forth flood or hell, for Dongwook to get you out of his mind. but you were never his. to him, you were meant to be admired and pined over from a distance; after all, you were his brother's.

you were never his.

but the heart wanted what it wants, even in this very day. was it the devil or was the universe hard at work when temptation gave way to guilt after Donghan's death? what was the tipping point that caused him to buckle under his obsession for you? and what now, that he is trying his very best to get over you, even after what feels like eons has passed?

he was a lover, not a fighter.

but there is woe to destiny when soft heart turns into stone and the sun rises from the west.

you see, swordsmanship ran in the han family for generations prior to dongwook's; it was said that once upon a time, they were the best in the country, so much that they were granted status and power by the country. what an honour it was for them, to be held to such esteem. alas, history would have it that they would also see their downfall.

pohang holds a special place in the family's heart; it's home, yes but it's also a place of doom, one they had no idea would be intertwined with such tragedy.

it was spring night, right about the equinox when it happened and dongwook was just 16. the whole village was celebrating for the oldest son of the han household had just gotten married. everyone was sharing food and throwing a feast in the main square. lanterns decorated every corner of the village and the air smelled ripe of fresh fruits and flowers. the shamans had finished the rituals and the fireworks had gone off into the sky, lighting up the night in hues of blues, yellow and green.

the village was bustling but only those who looked very closely would notice two specific people missing from the party.

and by heavens was she the most beautiful creature dongwook had ever seen.

she looked at him with eyes of silver moonlight that brimmed with tears and his heart was breaking. how could she be so sad yet, how could he not do a thing to wipe that sorrow away?

"i hate seeing you like this," he whispered, reaching out for her hand. dismay washed onto his face when she jerked her arm back, refusing to be touched.

"you did this. you caused this," she whispered back in a soft broken sob. "if you could have stopped this before-"

he reached for her again, pulling her smaller body to his with intent. "then let me fix it now. let's run away. just you and i. please, hayoon-ah."

"what the hell is going on in here?" a voice boomed like thunder, louder than the fireworks outside.

shock rippled through the entire house and before he knew it, it was chaos.

hayeon was begging, pleading and crying but dongwook had barely been able to register any of it. all he could see was donghan's eyes, filled with rage and betrayal. the oldest of the han children had witnessed his newly betrothed wife and brother sharing a moment akin to lovers' intimacy and there was nothing but fury that lit his insides. and in that fit of anger, his sword had been drawn and pointed immediately at dongwook's throat.

everything else after that was a blur; self-defence became a fight for his life and for hayoon's honour, and that fight turned into the biggest tragedy that pohang would ever face.

the brother's fight was more than just hurt pride; it was a culmination of years of envy despite what their relationship seemed like. and the scuffle made a mess to the house; the shelves were to the floor and soon enough, so were the lamps and the candles that were inside. the wooden panels caught on fire first and it was too late by the time anyone noticed.

the place was lit like hell come to earth; smoke filled every nook and cranny and it would get worse by the moment. the party outside had stopped and the villagers had begun running about to dowse the house. dongwook's first thought was to save both hayoon and donghan and while he succeeded saving hayoon, it wasn't so fortunate with donghan.

"hyung, come on! let's get out!" dongwook grunted, pulling donghan up onto his shoulders. however, the older boy only pushed him away, tears in his eyes.

"no. only one of us will."

the clangs of swords rumbled against the cackling fire. and the two boys fought till death in the burning building, one for vengeance and one for his own life. dongwook was terrified but he knew that if he stopped, there was no winning against the fury donghan felt so he fought back as hard as he could. and in his own attempt to save himself, his blade sank into flesh, past sinnewy muscles and deep into crevices. donghan's body stilled and fell right into dongwook's arms, empty and soulless. and the younger boy remained in place, in the midst of hell, on his knees and cradling his dear brother to his chest in sorrow and despair, not knowing the kind of guilt he would be carrying from then onwards.

He’s always been plagued with nightmares ever since that incident and it’s always in the middle of the night when his demons choose to awaken his guilt and push him to teeter over the edge of insanity. 

He doesn’t know when it started but at one point, he began finding comfort in your lap. you constantly urge him to rest and he finds that he is only able to do that with you. when his scars bleed and when life throws salt onto his wounds, when his eyes are bloodshot with the lack of sleep, he finds solace in your arms, face buried in your neck and allows himself to get lost in sleep.
