I really liked to concept of using coffee to create different tones of stain and using a variety of commonly available household items/materials to create different patterns or effects.

As someone who is not an artist and has never attempted something like this before, a wish would have been to have provided us all with a pre-sketched template that you could have guided us through step-by-step on the process of creating the completed piece. I feel as if mine ultimately kind of ended up looking like one tone throughout the entire piece. Without being able to see my pencil lines I don't think it would ultimately be recognizable as anything.

However, I appreciate that this is an activity/lesson that requires much more time than we have been allotted in this class and with a lot more time I think I could have created a much better final product. Something I might definitely try on my own when I can devote a lot more time to it.

I very much enjoyed this project. I don't know if it was the sepia effect but it turned out beautifully. I liked that the materials are inexpensive, non-toxic, and easy to clean. I would love to see with the kids could come up with, especially with the creativity of tools.

I wonder how well used coffee would work?

I also wonder what other kinds of spices and plant dyes could be created. Dandilion, beets, etc.

With limited tones that can be created I found it hard to get areas darker after I already used dark colours. Maybe some steps of how to go from light areas to darker ones would be useful.

I barely used much of the coffee grounds provided to create the composition.

I think it would be valuable to get students to create a value scale using their mixed coffee grounds before starting their landscapes.

If you were to do this with younger children who have not yet developed the skills necessary for drawing a landscape (one or two point perspective) I would break this lesson down into multiple lessons and teach them the drawing techniques first. Then I would practice how to create values and create textures. Next I would have them complete a guided lesson where everyone is using the same template before having them create their own individual landscapes. If students need a landscape sketch for reference you google search a landscape pencil sketch and print multiple copies for students to practice on. Also, before doing any art lessons I always start the year teaching students about the elements of art and principles of design where they are often referenced in other lessons throughout the school year.

2 Stars
I love this activity so much. It will definitely replace painting with pigment in my classroom. The final product is so beautiful, the cost is so low and the scent is so lovely. I can't wait to try it out.
I appreciate your intro, especially the bit about the brushes, and the mini-activity of making different strokes and imagining what they could be used for.

1 Wish
It would've been nice to do a little paint along, with a document camera perhaps, to see your techniques.

In a world of tight classroom resources, this project wins!

Your lesson was well thought out and presented. I found it engaging and easy to follow along.

I did something wrong when I tried the salt sprinkle effect... all I did was glue the salt to the paper.

This is amazing Joelene. I love how you used layering to create so much texture. Well done!

Thanks for the feedback Phil. As for gluing down the salt I wouldn't say it is wrong. Maybe the technique you used could create a snow on the mountain look if you were to leave the salt piled and in place.
