To answer the above question I learned how important it is to support both the student and the families of bilingual students.  I can support families through written communication in the native language, and taking the time to study about their culture, so I can make the best effort to welcome them and respond to questions and concerns in a respectful manner. In the classroom I can use more visual displays in both English and the student’s native language. This class helped me to see the students do best when given many opportunities to speak and listen before reading and writing. If possible, bilingual students can benefit by conversing with others in their native language to further understand the subject being explored in class. I can share the text backwards and provide opportunities for the bilingual students to share about their culture so they feel accepted and supported to be both a part of our classroom and proud of their first language and culture. I was very impressed by all the neurological benefits of being bilingual and can share these benefits with the families to help them understand that conversing in the native language at home will have long term lasting benefits for their students. I equally found learning all the similarities and differences in culture eye opening. I see how important it is to be cognizant of the differences in order to ensure a safe classroom environment for a variety of cultures. I was impressed by many other cultures who value family, and relationships, and approach time as fluid and flexible. I am more aware how easily we in the United States can come off as rude, and impatient. I look forward to utilizing the new skills taught in this class.
