During one of my teaching internships, I remember observing a lesson about being a good citizen. It was by far one of my favorite units I got to be a part of and feel as though it can be a very valuable lesson to all ages, not just Kindergarten level classrooms. In the specific class I was observing in, most of the unit was done through an online program. With this being said, we did not incorporate much literature into it which is why I was eager to chose this topic. This topic can be found in the Kindergarten social studies curriculum.

Fiction Choice Affordances and Limitations

Affordances: This picture book is full of color and illustrations to help keep children engaged. All of the illustrations have important meaning behind them and accurately support the text. My favorite part about the pages is how big the text is on each page. The author provides different examples of interactions where one should be a good citizenship, helping children gain a good understanding of right and wrong.

Limitations: The book contains a lot of words on each page making the story last longer. This is not a huge set back but could cause students to lose focus and not fully engage with the book.

Nonfiction Choice Affordances and Limitations

Affordances: I love how this book uses real pictures of children making good choices. This can help encourage students to use these childrens actions as an example of how they can be a good citizenship. A bonus to this book is that it is a good book for Kindergarten students to read themselves. This can easily be tied into a reading lesson that relates to their social studies unit.

Limitations: This book is slightly outdated in terms of the photos. While I do not think this would affect any students in the classroom, some may question this or let it distract them from the overall meaning of the book.

Interactive Choice Affordances and Limitations

Affordances: This website allows children to make choices based on the prompts they are given. All of the prompts are based on making the right or wrong choice. This can encourage students to decide how they can make right decisions to be a good citizen.

Limitations: I wish there were more to this interactive cite than a few right or wrong questions. The game is pretty short which can be good or bad depending on the attention span of your students. This could be improved by adding a few more questions or adding a variety of different types of questions into the mix.
