Before Chapter 5 of the Novel, Jay Gatsby lies about his past and uprising. Gatsby tells Nick that he was, "educated at Oxford" (Fitzgerald 69), when he really went to "the small Lutheran college of St. Olaf"(Fitzgerald 105). Gatsby's lack of honesty proves the embarrassment that he has when it comes to his past.

Until Daisy and Nick come around, it does not seem like Gatsby has any real friends or important people in his life. In Chapter 5, after being asked about Gatsby's house, Daisy responds by saying, "I love it, but I don't know how you live there all alone" (Fitzgerald 96). Gatsby responds by saying that he "keeps it full of interesting people," but these people, are not really friends of Gatsby. Just people who use him for his house parties.

Gatsby lives the dream of most people in this world. He is rich, successful and has a beautiful house. Nick describes Gatsby's house as, "A factual imitation of some Hotel de Ville in Normandy, with a tower on one side, spanking new under a thin beard of raw ivy, and a marble swimming pool, and more than forty acres of lawn" (Fitzgerald 8). Although Gatsby has a lot, he does not have what he wants the most, Daisy.

Throughout the novel Gatsby acts very flashy and buys the most flamboyant things he can. Before he sees Daisy for the first time in five years he decides to wear, "a white flannel suit, silver shirt, and gold-colored tie" (Fitzgerald 84). For most people, an outfit including a silver suit and gold tie is not an average outfit, but for Gatsby this is normal.
