Sumerian priests developed a writing system that could record far more than numbers of objects. Writing was so useful that priests set up schools to train scribes. They wrote the first mathematics books and there number units were based on units of 60. They would break up a spoken language and sounds. Then you have to find a way to represent those words and sounds with symbols. Next you have to develop some way of recording these symbols. Finally you would have to teach others how to read and write this language.
