Struggling with dyslexia (undiagnosed at the time), I never felt comfortable reading aloud, but I knew I could find a quiet place in the corner. Ms. Kauffman, the librarian, would walk over to me with her Hush Puppy shoes silently squishing across the floor, she showed me how to read by looking at pictures. I loved books because of her! The irony is that I loved books! In fact, I often would ask for books that I couldn’t read. I preferred books that were enhanced with a few pictures. I loved books with illustrations at the beginning or especially at the end of chapters.  It was a treat to find a little illustration of a castle, or map at the end of every chapter. It was my own secret reward system. My first book that I finished in its entirety was Das Doppelte Lottchen by Erich Kastner. Immediately I had to get every Laura Ingall’s Wilder book (even if I did struggled to read). The big woods was a place that I dreamt of escaping to with Pete, my dog, acting as Jack. I could taste the candy cane that Mr. Edward's brought Laura. After reading By the Shores of Silver Lake, I soon received my own horse. It wasn't long before Champ and I were raising through our own fields.

Stephen King was my hero (and still is) Carrie and Pet Sematary were my favorite books--I often tried to write in King's style. The dialogue in the books kept me glued to each page. He truly is the King of story telling. We take turns reading stories by looking at pictures. I don’t want them to just read or listen to the story, I want them to become immersed in the story. Even if they struggle to read, they will learn to experience the joy of reading--just as I did. It is my single most passion in the world to excite children about literature (especially, those who swear they hate books).
