Encomienda System-Encomienda, in colonial Spanish America, legal system by which the Spanish crown attempted to define the status of the Indian population in its American colonies. It was based upon the practice of exacting tribute from Muslims and Jews during the Reconquista (“Reconquest”) of Muslim Spain.

Enlightenment-a philosophical movement of the 18th century, characterized by belief in the power of human reason and by innovations in political, religious, and educational doctrine.

Great Awakening-the series of religious revivals among Protestants in the American colonies, especially in New England, lasting from about 1725 to 1770.

indentured servant- A person under contract to work for another person for a definite period of time, usually without pay but in exchange for free passage to a new country. During the seventeenth century most of the white laborers in Maryland and Virginia came from England as indentured servants.

Inflation- increase in the supply of money in relation to the amount of goods available resulting in a rise in prices; act of filling with air or gas; state of being filled with air or gas 

Mayflower Compact-An agreement reached by the Pilgrims on the ship the Mayflower in 1620, just before they landed at Plymouth Rock. The Mayflower Compact bound them to live in a civil society according to their own laws.

Peons-worker who labors in order to repay a debt; day laborer 

Pilgrims- A group of English Puritans, persecuted in their own country, who emigrated to America. The first group arrived on the Mayflower in 1620. They landed at Plymouth Rock, in what is now Massachusetts, and established the Plymouth Colony, with the Mayflower Compact as their constitution.

Protestant Reformation-a religious movement of the 16th century that began as an attempt to reform the Roman Catholic Church and resulted in the creation of Protestant churches.

Puritan-a member of a group of Protestants that arose in the 16th century within the Church of England, demanding the simplification of doctrine and worship, and greater strictness in religious discipline: during part of the 17th century the Puritans became a powerful political party.

Quaker-A member of the Religious Society of Friends. The Quakers are a group of Christians who use no scripture and believe in great simplicity in daily life and in worship. Their services consist mainly of silent meditation.

Religious Tolerance- when people allow other people to think or practice other religions and beliefs. In a country with a state religion, toleration means that the government allows other religions to be there.

Columbian Exchange-the interchange of plants, animals, and diseases between the Old World and the Americas following Columbus's arrival in the Caribbean in 1492.

Salem witchcraft trials-a series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. Cabinet-The Cabinet of the United States is composed of the most senior appointed officers of the executive branch of the federal government of the United States, who are generally the heads of the federal executive departments.

Impressment-the act in which men were captured and forced into naval service.

Intolerable Acts-a series of British measures passed in 1774 and designed to punish the Massachusetts colonists for the Boston Tea Party. For example, one of the laws closed the port of Boston until the colonists paid for the tea that they had destroyed.

Kentucky and Virginia-political statements drafted in 1798 and 1799, in which the Kentucky and Virginia legislatures took the position that the federal Alien and Sedition Acts were unconstitutional.

Land ordinance of 1785-The Ordinance of 1785 put the 1784 resolution in operation by providing a mechanism for selling and settling the land, while the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 addressed political needs. The 1785 ordinance laid the foundations of land policy until passage of the Homestead Act in 1862.

Louisiana Purchase-The purchase by the United States from France of the huge Louisiana Territory in 1803. President Thomas Jefferson ordered the purchase negotiations, fearing that the French, then led by Napoleon, wanted to establish an empire in North America.

Loyalists-American colonists who remained loyal to the British Crown during the American Revolutionary War.

Marbury v. Madison-a landmark United States Supreme Court case in which the Court formed the basis for the exercise of judicial review in the United States under Article III of the Constitution.

Minutemen-Armed American civilians who were active in the Revolutionary War and in the period just preceding the war. They were named Minutemen because they were ready to fight alongside regular soldiers at a moment's notice.

Nonimportation agreements-a series of commercial restrictions adopted by American colonists to protest British revenue policies prior to the American Revolution. Britain's Stamp Act of 1765 triggered the first nonimportation agreements.

Non-Intercourse Act-This Act lifted all embargoes on American shipping except for those bound for British or French ports.

Federalism-a system of government in which entities such as states or provinces share power with a national government.

Olive Branch Petition-the colonists' last ditch effort to make peace with the British king and avoid a war between Britain and the colonies. ... Instead, he proceeded to declare the American colonies to be in rebellion.

Patriots-the colonists of the Thirteen Colonies who rebelled against British control during the American Revolution and in July 1776 declared the United States of America an independent nation.

Pinckney's Treaty- the treaty was signed in San Lorenzo de El Escorial on October 27, 1795 and established intentions of friendship between the United States and Spain.

Pontiac's Rebellion-a war waged by Indians of the Great Lakes region against British rule after the French and Indian War.

Proclamation of 1763-The British government passed the Proclamation of 1763 in the 13 colonies to end conflicts between American Indians and colonial settlers after the French and Indian War.

Quartering Acts-Acts of British Parliament in the local governments of the American colonies to provide the British soldiers with any needed accommodations or housing. It also required colonists to provide food for any British soldiers in the area.
