Research have shown that the amount of Singapore student having mental related issues such as depression and anxiety have been on the rise.
More teenagers from top schools are seeking help at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) for school related stress. The clinics saw an average of about 2,400 new cases every year from 2012 to 2017.
This is because of the stress and competitiveness in the student bodies, because of the desire to do well in their studies to meet with personal or parental expectations.
One of such examples was the test conducted OECD to see the stress experienced by students. 66 per cent of students across all OECD countries said they were worried about poor grades at school, but among Singapore students, it was 86 per cent. Thus, this reflects on the stress in Singapore's educational system.

Singapore households spent S$1.4 billion on tuition, based on the Household Expenditure Survey conducted by the Department of Statistics from October 2017 to September 2018. This shows the amount of tuition that Singapore students are receiving each year.
Youths often face long days at school, hours of homework, and are then pushed by parents to have private tuition, which is having an impact on mental wellbeing – a recent report found that overall the city’s pupils reported higher levels of anxiety than average.
This shows the connection between competitive environment in school and the tuition culture in Singapore.

The bell curve system is one of the leading contributors to competition amongst students.
The bell curve system demands that you are not only doing good, you are doing comparatively better than your peers. This is why there is so much competition between the students. You have to do a better job than your peers and parents usually turn to tuition to get their children an edge over others whose parents are unwilling or unable to give them tution.

CCA can train our skills base on our personal interests as we get to choose the options we want. Since CCA's are not examed, it will have a more relaxed pace and we get to enjoy ourselves while training in what we like, and might be able to help the country in the future. Every so often, there will be competitions we have to participate in, for example SYF, and they usually require everyone in the CCA to perform well, therefore nourishing teamwork, an important trait for a good leader.
