In this song, Marvin Gaye is conveying that "war is not the answer" and "love can conquer hate." Transcendentalist writers like Thoreau and Emerson didn't believe in war and knew that there are better ways to solve an issue. Marvin Gaye thought of this idea when he wrote the song during the height of the Vietnam War. He wanted to tell people that they should ask questions about what's going on.

Grasse looked through Thoreau's journals and found a town that he eventually built a distillery in and is planning to start selling soon. Grasse saw that the world was becoming out of control and found a way to have peace in founding his distillery away from most of society. With his distillery, Grasses could work the way he wanted and contiune to do what he loves.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m21geJLWxtI

This song exemplifies this idea in a somber tone and describes the value of doing nothing but thinking of what can be done in true thought. Otis Redding sings in a state of relaxation and lets all of his mind lose to express his ideas and think as a individual.
