While there is a wide variety of ways that restorative practices can be implemented from community circles to more focused discussions with a few or individual students I think the most important this is that we do so regularly with an open heart and mind.

Start by building a classroom/school community by making connections and getting to know the students in your class and staff in your building. See people for who they are and meet them where they are at rather than putting your own thoughts/perspective on a situation. Use the sense of community that was built as the foundation of wanting to restore things when a problem arises.

It takes a whole team. We need administrators, teachers, parents, and students to buy in. It will not happen overnight. You need time - 3 year plan! Start with community and language. Be present and show we care.

Support initiatives by healing the community first

Go slow address concerns of those who may feel challenged by this path

Regular meetings providing ideas, support, opportunity for sharing successes and challenges as growth opportunities

Be the model in practice as the adult community to foster this in the student and whole building and district community

Failures happen that is how we learn so reflect and support these experiences with opportunity to support one another.

This is a multi year initiative not a magic wand.

I will try SSMART not just with behavior but with academics too. Also, I will use some of the language in the book as sentence starters for conversations with my students. I would love for the whole building to be on board too!
