The virtues found in sawm

1. Attaining Taqwa (God-consciousness)

The main goal of fasting is to develop taqwa—being constantly aware of Allah in all actions. When Muslims fast, they avoid not only food and drink but also sinful thoughts and behaviors, which helps strengthen their connection with Allah.

"O you who have believed, fasting is prescribed for you... that you may attain taqwa." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:183)

2. Self-control Over Desires

Fasting trains Muslims to resist basic desires like eating, drinking, and even negative speech. This self-discipline carries over to other aspects of life, helping a person control anger, lust, or impulsive actions.

It is a spiritual "training camp" that builds inner strength and control.

3. Patience and Endurance

Fasting builds sabr (patience) by teaching Muslims to stay calm despite hunger, thirst, fatigue, or difficult people. It’s a daily exercise in patience and mental endurance for the sake of Allah.

4. Gratitude for Allah’s Blessings

Going without food, water, and comfort for a portion of the day makes a person truly value the simple things they often take for granted. Fasting awakens the heart to appreciate Allah’s blessings more deeply.

5. Empathy and Compassion for the Needy

By personally feeling hunger and thirst, Muslims develop empathy for the poor and less fortunate. This often leads to acts of charity (sadaqah) and zakat, especially during Ramadan.

6. Sincerity in Worship (Ikhlas)

Unlike other acts of worship, fasting is purely between the individual and Allah. There’s no physical sign that someone is fasting—it teaches sincerity, as only Allah knows what’s in the heart.

7. Cleansing the Soul

Fasting helps cleanse the soul by reducing distractions and temptations. It creates a spiritual environment for self-purification, repentance, and remembrance of Allah (dhikr).

8. Forgiveness of Sins

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

"Whoever fasts during Ramadan with faith and seeking reward, all his past sins will be forgiven." (Bukhari & Muslim) Sincere fasting leads to a spiritual reset—likestarting with a clean slate.

9. Spiritual Reflection and Renewal

Ramadan encourages deeper engagement with the Qur’an, nightly prayers (taraweeh), and du’a. Fasting slows down the worldly rush and allows time for spiritual growth and reflection.

10. Unity of the Ummah (Community Bonding)

Muslims around the world fast together, break their fasts at the same times, and perform nightly prayers in congregation. This creates a strong sense of unity, equality, and belonging among the global Muslim community.

THE VIRTUES FOUND IN ZAKAH/SADAQAH

1. Purification of Wealth and Soul

Zakah literally means purification and growth. When a Muslim gives zakah, their remaining wealth becomes purer and more blessed. It also purifies the heart from greed, selfishness, and material attachment.

Qur’an (9:103): “Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase…”

It’s not just about giving — it's about spiritual cleansing.

2. Increases Barakah (Blessings)

Even though you are giving wealth away, Allah promises to return it in better and more abundant ways. This increase may not always be material, but can be in the form of peace, health, or contentment.

Hadith: “Charity does not decrease wealth.” (Muslim)

Giving opens the door for more rizq (provision) from unexpected sources.

3. Gaining Allah’s Pleasure and Reward

Charity is one of the most beloved actions to Allah. Giving sincerely for His sake brings immense reward, multiplied many times.

Qur’an (2:261): “The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed of grain that grows seven spikes...”

That’s 700 times reward or more!

4. Relief for the Needy and Vulnerable

Zakah is a lifeline for the poor, orphans, widows, and those in debt. It provides food, shelter, education, and dignity. It creates social balance and reduces suffering.

By giving, we become a means of mercy for others — and in return, Allah shows us mercy.

5. Erases Sins

Just like water puts out fire, sadaqah erases sins.

Hadith: “Sadaqah extinguishes sins just as water extinguishes fire.” (Tirmidhi)

This means even small acts of charity can bring great forgiveness from Allah.

6. Builds Generosity and Breaks Greed

Giving often, especially when it’s difficult, trains the heart to be selfless. It frees us from being attached to money and teaches trust in Allah as the true Provider.

You learn to give even from what you love — a sign of true iman (faith).

7. Protection from Calamities and Hellfire

Sadaqah is not just spiritual — it protects you in this world too. Many hadith mention that charity can ward off accidents, illness, and sudden misfortunes.

Hadith: “Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity.” (Tirmidhi)
“Save yourself from Hellfire, even if it is with half a date.” (Bukhari)

Even a small act matters.

8. Strengthens the Ummah and Social Bonds

When the wealthy support the poor, society becomes more just, unified, and compassionate. Zakah prevents extreme inequality and prevents hatred or resentment between classes.

It builds love and trust in the community.

9. Attracts Divine Mercy and Ease

When you help others in difficulty, Allah helps you in yours.

“Allah helps His servant as long as the servant helps his brother.” (Muslim)

Sadaqah invites ease into your life—both spiritually and practically.

10. Proof of True Faith (Iman)

True believers are those who give generously, without expecting anything in return. Charity shows that you trust Allah, love your fellow humans, and believe in the unseen reward.

Qur’an (3:92): “You will never attain righteousness until you give from that which you love.”

It shows sincerity, gratitude, and selflessness — all signs of strong faith.

Not all charity is money! Sadaqah can also be:

Smiling at someone 😊

Saying kind words

Helping someone in need

Sharing food

Teaching knowledge

Removing harm from a path

The virtues in sawm-Taqwa-Reading the Qur'an

🕌 1. Virtue in Sawm (Fasting)

Sawm (fasting) is more than just abstaining from food and drink, it is a form of worship filled with spiritual virtues. Fasting helps a person develop self-control, patience, discipline, and a greater awareness of Allah. It also encourages kindness, empathy for the poor, and turning away from bad habits.

🌟 2. Taqwa (God-consciousness)

The main goal of fasting is to develop taqwa, which means being aware of Allah at all times, being mindful of one’s actions, and striving to obey Him.

As mentioned in the Qur’an (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:183):
“O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed for you... so that you may attain taqwa.”

This shows that fasting is a tool to bring the heart closer to Allah and build spiritual strength.

📖 3. Reading the Qur’an

Ramadan, the month of fasting, is also known as the month of the Qur’an, because it is the month in which the Qur’an was revealed.

(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:185):
“The month of Ramadan is the one in which the Qur’an was sent down…”

Reading and reflecting on the Qur’an during fasting enhances understanding, spiritual focus, and connection with Allah. The Qur’an provides guidance that strengthens one’s taqwa.

🔗 Connection Between the Three:

👉 Fasting is a form of worship that helps develop taqwa,
👉 Taqwa leads a person to become more devoted, obedient, and spiritually aware,
👉 and reading the Qur’an deepens taqwa by providing divine guidance and reflection.

A simple chain:

✅ Fasting trains the soul
✅ Leads to awareness and obedience to Allah (taqwa)
✅ Taqwa encourages engagement with the Qur’an
✅ The Qur’an gives spiritual strength and clarity
✅ Taqwa continues to grow and remain strong.

📝 In Conclusion:

Fasting is not just about hunger, it's a spiritual journey to develop taqwa. And the best way to maintain and strengthen taqwa is by reading and connecting with the Qur’an. These three elements fasting, taqwa, and the Qur’an, are beautifully linked, especially during the month of Ramadan, to shape a better, more faithful Muslim.
