I am Hannah Alterman. When choosing these books, I wanted to create a set of that I could use as a future educator and think of lessons that I would want to implement in my future classroom. I feel that all the books I have chosen would be good for elementary aged students 2nd-4th grade. All of my books focus on African Americans and the struggles they have faced and talks about many influential people and the the effect they have made that is still important today. I would teach this set of books during black history month.

Written by Andrea Davis Pinkney and illustrated by Brian Pinkney. Duke was an influential African American who made a mark with his music. One activity I would do with this book would have the students make a paper musical instrument and write facts down about Duke Ellington's life.

This book was written by Tololwa M. Mollel and illustrated by E.B. Lewis. This short book touched on the topic of minority cultures, but also taught many great lessons. Perseverance and determination were shown by the main character, Saurni. One activity I would do with the students would have them draw Saruni and then identify characteristics about his appearance, character traits, feelings and motivation.
