#2 and #4) I would argue that the setting, Canada, makes it harder for the main characters to survive because of the climate and history. Our cast is trying to get away from people and recruiters (those who hunt them) which means they need to stray very far from populated areas. This makes sense, however, it’s very hard to do that in Canada since the most unpopulated place is the north where it’s freezing cold. Canada also has a history of residential schools and killing/severely harming its indigenous population. On the subject of Recruiters, they capture indigenous people and send them to camps, which resemble that of residential schools. They gain control through violence and fear. There are very few places to hide which is why it is so imperative the main cast makes it North (and also why their setting works against them for that reason). Most follow them and support them because they too want dreams. Even some indigenous characters have joined with them just to stay alive in fear of what would happen if they were caught.

Global Issue: Eugenics Today
While it's most obvious that there were residential schools across North America as late as 2007, I chose to make another parallel: forced sterilization. In The Marrow Thieves, characters are hunted and returned to these schools, but parts of their bodies are taken for the benefit of others. A legacy of eugenics laws in the US is involuntary sterilization of women that occurred (occurs) in state homes and detention centers. The article I chose explores the history of women and men (a smaller number) in CA, from 1909-1974, were forcibly sterilized citing issues of "poor heredity," "overpopulation," "mental defectiveness." This was seen as “the protection of the public health” and “the health security of the citizens of every State” but the women affected were largely Mexican, Puerto Rican, Black, and/or mentally ill ("Public Health" 1130). In The Marrow Thieves, and Unwind, young people's body's are expendable and can become the property of "the state" without their consent. In Brave New World some women voluntarily offer their reproductive organs "for the good of society." Interesting how in these futures these personal violations are so common.

Question 2- 
The setting of the novel is in a dystopian world where many parents sign up their children to be unwound, or to be sent away from them. Many parents sign the order due to issues going on in their own families and due to other reasons. Examples of some these reasons or issues are, religious sacrifice, teen behavioral problems, failed expectations, etc.. The unwinding works against many of those teens because the ordered was signed without their consent, while on the other hand, some teens want to be unwound due to family traditions or they have no choice but to be unwound due to financial and other types of issues going on in their families, and they think the  unwinding of these teens can help them solve these problems. 

- This article talks about teenagers and their privacy in different situations, places, and at different circumstances. It talks about how teenagers don’t have the exact same amount of privacy rights as someone who is older than them, and they also don’t have the whole independence to make decisions for themselves. Teenager parents in many situations invade their privacy and freedom by monitoring their actions. The article also talks about how teens have fewer privacy rights in school than at their home, teens and their medical rights, and online privacy.

  1. How do your characters seem to FEEL within their world? - I feel like the Characters in this novel feel unwanted,alone, and confused. They are being pushed out of their homes by their own parents with no place to go. Just to be unwinded.
  2. The article i chose was based off in Hollywood production torture and that it will never be justified. The idea of constantly putting thousands at risk is not idea and only dehumnizing. This issue is important because torture is not fair to nobody withput the instention of tourchtuing yourself. This compares to my noval because the idea of getting Unwinded is dehumanizing. Living where you aren’t dead but also arent alive is worst than tourture.

In this article, it discusses the ethicalness of abortians and fetuses with defects. It talks about how in America, 85% of couples who find out their child will be born with down syndrome, they terminate the pregnancy. Upon news of this the doctor tells them about the difficulties of raising a child with down syndrome, and how it will take a toll on the family. Yet they fail to mention that children with down syndrome are actually happier than children without it and that the families are happy as well. There is a big split in our country of people who believe that aborting these babies is wrong, and it is unethical. While others believe that them being born brings down our society and that they are defects. We see this issue of ableism in a brave new world but they've taken it to the extreme and have thrown ethics out the window. Dependent on your caste ranking, you may or may not have birth defects. The lower class ranks are deprived of oxygens as fetuses so they are born with different issues within them. #1 The article “Mental Health” talks about the concept of mental illness and the effects it has on society. America is one of the highest stressed countries, and over 51 million have mental illnesses in the country. Mental illness is a very important issue becuase there has been a big increase in suicide in the country compare to the past years. Mentally ill people feel isolated because of their mental illness, and some lack resources that can help them. Lots of people were depressed and alone during the pandemic, like Matt from “The House of the Scorpion” felt alone when he was stuck inside the little home out in the opium fields.

Unwinds are treated as vicious criminals, and a very large majority of people are biased against them. Many unwinds only participate in “criminal activities” just to be able to scrape by until they’re 18, when they can no longer be legally unwound. Unwinds are also known for creating gangs/groups to increase their chances of survival, and police forces severely mistreat them using this as a main reason. The police forces we see being used to capture the unwinds almost always use excessive force, and we even see a point of view of a cop that wishes they could use lethal force on unwinds.

The article I chose states how poverty-stricken children in Colombia and Brazil were treated as “throwaways”, and were arrested and violently mistreated by the police force that was backed by the U.S. government. The police forces used were nicknamed ”Death Squads”, and were merely pseudo-legal. Children caught by the Death Squads almost always died brutal deaths or were tortured in captivity. It also stated how mainly children were targeted as they could more easily join gangs, guerrilla groups, and participate in general organized crime.

They’re treated like rabid animals, and Matt existing as a normal person isn’t accepted or generally allowed, only because of the way he was created.

Global Issue: Racial Relations
I think that racism is a topic that can easily be related to this story, although it more so relates to clones and non-clones versus different races. More specifically, I’ll be covering how race relations are quite obviously able to be connected to the story I’m reading. Race relations is how different races or ethnic groups interact with each other. This involves friction due to power dynamics, inequalities, and even violence between these different groups, summarized as how these groups can be racist towards each other. Racism is described as apathy/discrimination towards an ethnic/racial group different to your own. This is seen in House of Scorpion due to the treatment of clones, and how the groups may view/treat each other despite the fact that they’re all human. Main differences that fall in racial lines are things such as achievement or wealth gaps, which is prevalent due to the fact that clones are typically used for labor and not given much (if any) rights. Systematic racism is also easily applied, as there is racism built into the government system both in the story and in real life, generally relating to how a racial/ethnic group might be unable to achieve the same as someone from a more privileged group purely due to which category they fall into. The population’s tendency to extreme actions against racial groups is also affected by who is in power. For example, when Barack Obama was president the country was viewed as having moved past racism due to a black person being in the “highest position in America.” However, when Trump was next elected for President the tables turned and the highest public authority made the country out to have gone backwards. This relates to the book because although El Patron isn’t a powerful government figure, he still completely runs the surrounding area and uses clones to farm opium in the fields, since he has the ability to force clones to do so. To some degree, I also think that there is a relatable element to discriminated people based on not only racial and ethnic groups, but several others as well appropriating themselves to hide their culture or blend into white-dominated surroundings more which makes them more accepted. This is similarly seen as Matt acting contrary to the other clones, and despite his behavior being indistinguishable from a normal human, people still tag the clone identity onto him as a means of offense and stereotyping, even though the only difference is how he was created.

Question #1: The dystopian world in "Unwind" is in a precarious state because of the need to regulate women's reproductive systems and or rights. The morally unjust bureaucracy in the book passed a set of constitutional amendments post-Heartland War called, "The Bill of Life" which essentially, "states that human life may not be touched from the moment of conception until a child reaches the age of thirteen. However, between the ages of thirteen and eighteen, a parent may choose to retroactively "abort" a child." Basically it's a state of being that the child is terminated but ins't entirely "dead." This is so that they can harvest and dissect human bodies to be transplanted into different recipients. This process is meant to substitute abortion however, this ordeal can be avoided in some mannerisms by becoming pregnant (only for nine months), being a clapper (young terrorists), or being the age of eighteen (if you live and evade long enough). This fiasco created a tormenting state for society because of the fact that no teenager wants to be killed just because their parent didn't plan for their own individually, so everyone resist from their unwinding order, a pre-requisite to unwinding. In part three of this book, Transit, a story by health correspondents investigated a ukrainian maternity hospital for "malpractice" and "non-standard postmortem practice." With these institutions facing descrimination there is an uproar in society to change and resist. I was also very surprised by how they had a department dedicated to manipulating the Epsilons to love their horrid conditions. This is how they can control the caste systems and make sure that the Epsilons stay where they are. This makes me think of many events such as the former caste system and things such as selective-breeding animals to become more obedient. They treat humans like lab animals.

#2. The Stanford Prison Experiment, performed in 1971 by Stanford University psychology professor Philip Zimbardo, is deemed to be highly controversial, but the message that the experiment delivers about questioning our social rules and hierarchy can be relevant to the book Brave New World, and to our own world. The experiments were performed by professor Zimbardo’s student volunteers who were all “anti-war activists, hippies, long hair", but soon after the experiment proceeded, the behaviors of the volunteers changed drastically. The “prison guards” became violent and abusive, and the “prisoners” became submissive and frequently had real emotional breakdowns. Even the professor himself, by forcing the boys to continue the experiment, had become the highest authority of them all. “These are not prisoners! These are not guards! These are boys, and they are suffering and you are responsible and you have become affected by your own experiment. You have become the superintendent!" said the professor’s wife who convinced him to stop the experiment.  In the book Brave New World, we can see that they manipulate and shape people from as early as when they were embryos to fit into the social construct. Babies are made to perform "hypnopaedia" and go through procedures, such as electrocution, that will direct them to exactly where the “World Controllers” want them to be. Although the Stanford Prison Experiment was not as brutal, this raises the question as to how easy it is to shape someone into fitting the expected social behaviors.

Research discovered by the author shows that “And the milk from cows that have been treated with its transgenic growth hormones carries no warning, though, according to studies published in The Lancet, Science, The International Journal of Health Services, and others, it is linked to breast and prostate cancer.”(Paragraph 8). This issue is important in today’s society because although we may not believe in the endings of these dystopian novels, some have proven to be true about our society today, and it could very quickly end up just like one if we are not careful. Lives are being lost during the harvestation, which is pointless for the donor, as they are losing their life to assist someone else in surviving. This can relate to how there are two sides to organ donations, which are moral, and immoral. This donation is immoral if the patient is brain dead, as they will have a chance of resurrection. As listed in both the story and the article, there is unfairness when stopping the odds of a comeback from the deceased, which manipulates the system to declare murder. There is history behind this issue, as this has been done in several cultures, where there is instant death before an autopsy is done, and even limbs being amputated to be given away. It's hard to trust the fact that we haven't already cloned humans solely because it's immoral when we've done far worse things to our fellow human. You think cloning is worse than the holocaust? How long do we have until someone heartless enough gathers enough resources to create their own army of clones for personal benefit? Morality is not something that is used in a stable manner in humanity, therefore this fight for fairness is a ticking time bomb.

#2-The topic is related to the novel because the caste systems in Brave New World are also affected by these disabilities. In fact, the disabilities are purposefully given to the lower castes as to keep them below the others. Disabilities are considered something less than and it is imperative that the higher members of the castes don’t have them, otherwise they wouldn’t even be in the higher spots. They are also very strict on how to be a human and how you must be happy all the time. This directly contradicts mood disorder related mental illnesses. They are completely invalidating their natural existence and saying it is “wrong” to have these disorders. The reason they eliminate these disabilities from the highest classes and they want them to be the “best”, basically saying disabilities whether it be mental or physical, make you less than.

I have personally experienced this, when I broke my wrist doctors refused to give me a cast for it because of my insurance until I got back to Atlanta, as a result I had to keep my broken wrist in a brace for around three weeks. This affects many people's health as they are either kept from options that will be better for them or given options that are way too expensive for them. In the House of Scorpions, while Matt isn’t scammed, he instead isn’t given the treatment he deserves as the doctor lets him be malnourished,and  have allergies and bruises. The doctor sees what Rosa is doing to the kid, sees what kind of environment she is keeping him in and tells her that as long as the clone lives it's alright. This topic relates to the novel “Unwind” because there are orphans in the book, same as in the real world, who also have to work. One example of this is when the book mentions that Risa knows a few things about taking care of a baby, when Conner and Risa were on the run after the school incident. When Risa was in the state home she had to work with a few other nurses in what I believe to be a nursery, taking care of a lot of babies at one time.

This relates to the treatment of unwound children in Unwind. This article goes over the brutality police officers use in unjust situations and the things they will do when being presented with force. Some incidents of police brutality involve the use of a weapon such as a baton, Taser, or gun. The use of tear gas, pepper spray, or rubber bullets to disperse groups of people. But police brutality can go further than that, Police brutality can involve psychological intimidation, verbal abuse. Just as in Unwind the children are treated as less than human and their lives mean nothing but as an organ donation. An instance of police brutality in Unwind is when the police were trying to catch Connor. They were shooting tranquilizer bullets at him and hitting an innocent kid in the process. They also had no regard as to if they were to hit the kid with multiple bullets possibly killing him if enough tranquilizer was administered.

Their are these Controllers who govern over the World State and have increased 
 happiness majorly and have advanced technologically to control society as they please. Their are people who are made in test tubes and are brainwashed when they sleep when they are only a child. Also because of this the people of the World are physically and mentally diagnosed to be happy within their place in society and in where they work. Every single person in the  World State have a caste. There are 5 types, Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and then Epsilon. Alpha being the highly intelligent and physically strong where Epsilons are complete morons. You don't have a choice on which caste you get and you are severely treated differently based on your caste.  

#2-The Caste Systems used in Hindu culture are very similar to Brave New World. According to the Hindu caste system, Hindus are classified at birth, defining their places in society and the kinds of jobs they can do and whom they can marry. It is just like how the caste system is used in Brave New World. In Brave New World is a place where thinking does not exist because students are brainwashed to think differently about each other through repetition. Each Class is conditioned to be one type of person capable of performing a single job. Its society does not know anything about free will or thinking. As a condition of maintaining stability, people must appreciate the class they are born into. Those who don't have any idea of what else is available to them have no interest in being anything else because all they want is to be a part of what they already know. To prevent the spread of ideas, one of the primary goals of the World State is to create a dislike of other classes. This dislike could lead to revolt against the world state.
