The Falls of the Clyde (William Turner)

The painting is a vivid example of the romantic feeling expressed through painting. Turner was fascinated with the effects created by light playing on the spray of cascading water. The viewer is submerged in the radiant spray of the falls, as water and light fuse. The falls are painted with broad sweeping brushstrokes that express power and movement, while Turner's intense colours and chiaroscuro portray drama and passion. The painting reflects the Romantic notion of the sublime, a transcendent emotional experience of nature.
