They starting fighting and wrestling with each other. Grendel's mother clawed Beowulf several times and Beowulf decided his sword was no use so he used his bare hands instead. Beowulf was in a near death situation when Grendel's mother sat on top of him and tried to stab him in the chest. Fortunately his armor protected him, he got back up, and continued fighting. This compares to the Hero's journey because this is the "peak of the story" or the climax. The most exciting events happen when Beowulf is fighting with Grendel's mother.

Once Beowulf recovers from his near death situation, he sees a massive sword hanging on a near by wall and takes a hold of it. With all of his strength, he lifts the sword over his head and then slices Grendel's mother's head right off. This compares to the Hero's Journey because after Beowulf slaughters Grendel's mother, he is awarded with her head and a bloody sword that he can show Hrothgar.

Beowulf defeats Grendel's mother and after the battle he goes to see if Grendel is really dead. When Beowulf finds Grendel in his corner, with only one arm, Beowulf stabs him one last time in his head to be certain that he his dead. This compares to the Hero's Journey because this is the end for Grendel and Grendel's mother. The end result is that they both are dead and Beowulf is now a glorious hero.

Beowulf travels to the lake where Grendel's mother lives to try to kill her also. Once Grendel's mother sees that Beowulf entered her lair, she carries him to someone's battle-hall. This compares to the Hero's journey because after succeeding in his first battle, he has to approach the next one.

Beowulf rips Grendel's arm off and Grendel runs away because of the pain and goes back to the bottom of the marsh to die. This compares to the Hero's Journey because Beowulf has a smaller obstacle/battle to get over before he reaches the larger obstacle/battle which is the battle with Grendel's mother.
