Grendel's mother clawed Beowulf several times and Beowulf decided his sword was no use so he used his bare hands instead. Beowulf was in a near death situation when Grendel's mother sat on top of him and tried to stab him in the chest. Fortunately his armor protected him, he got back up, and continued fighting. This compares to the Hero's journey because this is the "peak of the story" or the climax.
