A general education teacher might be willing and able to participate in a collaboration, co-teaching, or coaching relationship to address the needs of gifted students. This mostly depends on what kind and how much training and professional development a gen ed teacher has had to be prepared to work with, have the flexibility to, and have the ability to offer the kinds of challenges gifted children need to grow. Having a gen ed teacher paired with a gifted teacher would be a great option because the gen ed teacher will have the subject content knowledge that is the core that everything else will depend on, and a gifted teacher may not have specific content knowledge and possess other skills and knowledge that applies directly to gifted thought and behavior.

A special education teacher is not necessarily the best option to participate in these types of relationships to address the needs of gifted students. Such teachers are not absolutely the wrong choice, but the usual focus of special education is not in the gifted area. They could possibly be willing to work with twice exceptional students as they are often equipped and experienced to handle the extra needs such students may have.

A gifted education teacher should be willing and best prepared to fill any and all of these relationship roles. Ideally, a gifted teacher has the personality, skills, training, and professional development to make this situation function smoothly to help reach, motivate, engage, and guide the students in learning and growing as learners.
