A little worse I fear. One of Oates' feet very bad this morning; he is wonderfully brave. We still talk of what we will do together at home.

Thursday, March 8.
Lunch. Worse and worse in morning; poor Oates' left foot can never last out, and time over footgear something awful. Have to wait in night footgear for nearly an hour before I start changing, and then am generally first to be ready. Wilson's feet giving trouble now, but this mainly because he gives so much help to others. We did four miles this morning and are now eight miles from the depot—a ridiculously small distance to feel in difficulties, yet on this surface we know we cannot equal half our old marches, and that for that effort we expend nearly double the energy.

Sunday, March 11.
Titus Oates is very near the end, one feels.... Nothing could be said but to urge him to march as long as he could. One satisfactory result to the discussion; I practically ordered Wilson to hand over the means of ending our troubles to us, so that any one of us may know how to do so. Wilson had no choice between doing so and our ransacking the medicine case. We have thirty opium tabloids apiece and he is left with a tube of morphine. So far the tragical side of our story. (R. 53.)

Friday, March 16 or Saturday 17.
At night Oates was worse and we knew the end had come.... He slept through the night before last, hoping not to wake; but he woke in the morning—yesterday. It was blowing a blizzard. He said, "I am just going outside and may be some time." He went out into the blizzard and we have not seen him since.... We knew that poor Oates was walking to his death, but though we tried to dissuade him, we knew it was the act of a brave man and an English gentleman. We all hope to meet the end with a similar spirit, and assuredly the end is not far.... We are cold on the march now, and at all times except meals.... We are at No. 14 pony camp, only two pony marches from One Ton Depot. We leave here our theodolite, a camera, and Oates' sleeping bags. Diaries, etc., and geological specimens carried at Wilson's special request, will be found with us or on our sledge.

How Mountains Grow

Our planet's core is surrounded first by a layer of Earth known as the mantle, and then by the outermost layer, called the crust. The Earth's mantle and crust are constantly shifting around beneath our feet, and over long periods of time those underground movements can actually shape the landscape around us, forming things like mountains and rivers and islands.

It was this shifting of the Earth's mantle and crust that was responsible for the rise of the Andes Mountains in South America – the second largest mountain belt in the world. But researchers are now realizing that the formation of these gigantic mountains did not happen as slowly as they had once believed. Carmala Garzione and her colleagues reviewed in-depth studies of layers of rock, lava flow, and the continuous movements of the Earth's crust to determine that the Andes Mountains actually formed rather abruptly, in a couple million years rather than tens of millions of years.

After reviewing the facts, Garzione and her colleagues now suggest that there are times during the formation of mountains when they stay the same height for tens of millions of years, and then rapidly grow taller for about one to four million years. They also believe that the abrupt formation of the Andes Mountains was caused by dense rocks at the base of the Earth's crust falling further down into the mantle.

The Andes Mountains affect the climate of a lot of South America, so understanding exactly how they rose from the Earth can tell us a great deal about how the land looked in the past and might look in the future. These new conclusions that suggest the Andes rose abruptly from the ground will change the way scientists study the history of our planet.

Yes. And it has nothing to do with global warming. It's a plate collision effect caused by Indian plate and Eurasia plate. Himalaya is the 2900 km collision stretch between the two plates. Since Indian plate is still pulling (north) against Eurasia, Himalaya is continuously growing taller.

From the picturesque karst landscape in Guilin and Yanshuo to the precipitous pillars in Zhangjiajie, from the colorful lakes in Jiuzhaigou to the Rainbow Mountains in Zhangye, China’s diverse natural beauty is as impressive as its splendid culture.

The Danxia landscape in Zhangye is vividly named “Rainbow Mountains” by many due to its dazzlingly colors. Danxia (丹霞 /dan-sshya/) means 'red, red clouds'. In China's remote northwest, Zhangye is ignored by ordinary travelers, but deeply loved by photographers.

The landscape is composed of curvy, layered, multihued formations, most of which are several hundred meters high. When the sun shines on them, their colors appear in full vibrancy. It looks like an oil painting when the vast red rock formations are simply set against a pure blue sky.

The best time to visit Zhangye is from June to September when the weather is most comfortable. The best time to take photo of these mountains is in the morning and during sunset, especially sunset, when the colors change continuously, showing yellow and red layers covered by a light gray layer
