One of my most favorite things about deep sea corals and sponges is that these beautiful, colorful, vertical organisms provide incredible, and critical habitat for deep sea organisms. I find the differences between them and the shallow water corals fascinating.  It's so interesting that many healthy deep sea corals are white, whereas that's a signal of death for shallow water corals.

I have been teaching for 14 years, and teaching marine biology in the desert is exciting and difficult. Exciting because more than half of my students have never even seen a river or lake, much less an ocean, and they are full of wonder. Difficult because I have no access to live materials (except aquariums).
