I am the Education Specialist with NOAAs Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary, which means I get to work with students and teachers from K-12 and beyond.
One of my most favorite things about deep sea corals and sponges is that these beautiful, colorful, vertical organisms provide incredible, and critical habitat for deep sea organisms. In a world of muddy sand and sandy mud these strange ancient organisms (especially sponges, they are just weird) add to the reason so much diversity exists in our deep sea!

The thing I find most amazing about deep water corals is how long they live, as much as a thousand years! I am looking forward to learning all about the deep water corals on the west coast.

Next school year, I am taking over as the Gifted Resource Teacher for the school. I found it fascinating that some deep sea coral look dead, when in reality its a vibrate community. I also thought it was very interesting that they are heavily dependent on the surface in terms of marine snow.

I teach marine science, biology, anatomy, and sometimes environmental science to high schoolers in Salem, Oregon. It was facinating that deep sea corals lack the symbiotic algae that shallow water corals have and instead exists primarily on the drifting marine snow. I also was impressed that deep sea coral species are so much older than other species found in the ocean.

Hello, I teach High School Marine Biology, physics and (next year) IB Chemistry in Tucson, AZ. I have been teaching for 14 years, and teaching marine biology in the desert is exciting and difficult. Exciting because more than half of my students have never even seen a river or lake, much less an ocean, and they are full of wonder. Difficult because I have no access to live materials (except aquariums). I love getting up to date information about the ocean, and the deep sea coral talk was so neat as I forget how diverse they are and how important they are to biodiversity in the ocean.
