The biggest piece of learning and most impactful piece of learning for me has been my connections to the Indigenous Community such as the ones we have received in our Indigenous class because that is where I am able to receive the most valuable information to relay on to students. I have learned to really value the connection to Indigenous people in this journey. I have unlearned my questioning of the importance of this content. In highschool, I can remember wondering why we were learning about Indigenous people so much and what relevance it had today. I am now much more aware of the importance and how crucial it is educate young people on.

I have learned that there are many resources on the internet that are unreliable, hold bias, stereotypes, and aren't portraying Indigenous Peoples in an authentic and respectful way. I have learned the importance of reading into articles or watching videos before determining they are acceptable to show students.

I have unlearned how easy it is to find Indigenous resources. The artifact I chose this week was about evaluating resources. There is so much thinking and reading that needs to go into resources before deciding what is a good resource and what maybe isn't so great.

The journey of discovering this through my Indigenous Perspectives class and my fourth year practicum has been eye opening. I feel as though I have grown as a teacher by simply being aware of the importance of evaluating different resources. The importance of putting in the time to discover which resources are the best. I have realized that students are so interested in learning about Indigenous Peoples. I remember the very first thing I mentioned to students were the acceptable names for Indigenous Peoples. I addressed the fact that Indian is no longer used and that if you come across it in a book, to replace it with a word that we deemed as culturally appropriate and respectful.

I have unlearned how to refer to different Indigenous peoples. I have learned how important it is to refer to each individual Indigenous culture by their name, and not simply generalize them by calling them "Indigenous peoples." Indigenous communities are made up of many different cultures, and are very different from each other. They are each distinct and unique from each other. This impacts my role as a teacher in how I present Indigenous studies to my students. I want my students to understand that "Indigenous peoples" is not a culture, but is made up of many individual cultures. That means that when we talk about a cultural group we say "the Blackfoot" for example, instead of "the Indigenous peoples."
