📝Reflection on My First Class of Performance Animation

>Today marked the beginning of my journey into the world of Performance Animation, and I’m already feeling excited and inspired. In our first class, I was introduced to what performance animation actually entails and how it differs from traditional animation techniques. I had heard the term before, but today I really understood its meaning. Essentially, performance animation is about bringing characters to life by capturing human movement and emotion, and then translating that into a digital format. It’s not just about creating movement; it’s about making characters feel real and expressive, as though they’re performing a scene just like a live actor.

>The part that really caught my attention was learning about motion capture (mocap), which plays a huge role in performance animation. Mocap is the technology that records real human movement through sensors and cameras, then maps that motion onto a 3D character. This allows animators to achieve highly realistic movement and emotion in their characters, whether it’s a subtle facial expression or complex body gestures. I’m excited by the possibilities this technology offers, as it allows animators to work with a higher level of realism and detail than traditional animation.

>My lecturer gave us a thorough overview of our first project, which involves creating an animation that demonstrates our understanding of performance animation and motion capture. This assignment is a great opportunity for me to experiment with the concepts we’ve learned and start thinking about how to bring an emotion or action to life through motion. We’ll be using motion capture as part of the project, which makes it even more exciting since I’ve never worked with mocap before.

>The thought of translating a real human performance into a character’s movement is both challenging and thrilling. I can already imagine how different it will be from the more conventional animation I’ve done in the past, and I’m eager to see how I can use these new techniques to tell a story. I feel motivated to explore the creative potential of this assignment and push my skills further.

>Overall, today’s class has given me a lot to think about, and I’m really excited to dive deeper into performance animation. I can’t wait to start working on the assignment and see where this project takes me. I’m looking forward to learning more about the mocap process and refining my animation skills in the context of real human performance.

📝Reflection on Group Brainstorming for Performance Animation Project

>This week, we made a major leap forward in our Performance Animation class by finally being grouped into teams of four. It feels great to be working with a group now, as animation projects are often more exciting when you can collaborate and combine different strengths. We spent the week brainstorming ideas for the theme and story we want to use for our first project, and while it was a bit challenging at first, I’m excited about the creative possibilities ahead.

>One of the first things we discussed as a group was the importance of choosing a theme that would allow us to really explore the principles of performance animation—capturing human emotion, movement, and expression. We also want our story to be something that will work well with motion capture technology, so we can bring our characters to life in a realistic and expressive way. The brainstorming session was a mix of exploring different concepts, throwing out wild ideas, and refining them as a team. I really enjoyed hearing everyone’s thoughts and bouncing ideas off one another, which helped us narrow down our direction.

>I hope that I can contribute well to the brainstorming process and help our group land on a solid idea. I’m excited about the chance to throw out creative concepts, but also to help shape the direction of the story in a way that plays to our strengths and the capabilities of performance animation. I want to make sure we come up with an idea that’s both creative and feasible—something that will let us experiment with motion capture and really push the boundaries of character performance.

>It’s also a little bit intimidating, because I want to make sure that I contribute ideas that will move the project forward, but I’m learning that it’s okay to have some ideas that may not be fully formed. The important thing is to keep the conversation flowing and build on each other’s thoughts. I’m hoping that, by the end of the brainstorming phase, we’ll have a strong theme that everyone feels passionate about and excited to bring to life.

>I’m looking forward to seeing how our ideas evolve over the next few weeks, and I’m committed to helping make sure we come up with something unique and impactful for the project. I can’t wait to get started on the next steps and start bringing our ideas to life with performance animation. I’m optimistic that with everyone's effort, we’ll produce something really great!

📝Reflection on Story Development for Performance Animation Project

>After our group discussion last week, things have definitely started to pick up momentum for our Performance Animation project. It’s been an exciting process so far, especially with everyone bringing their unique ideas to the table. Once we all pitched our individual story ideas, it was interesting to see how different everyone's concepts were. Some were more focused on drama, others on humor, and some even had abstract or fantasy elements. We each had the opportunity to explain our ideas and why we thought they’d work well for performance animation.

>The pitching session was a bit intense, but in a good way—it forced us to think critically about our concepts and how we could use the tools we have (like motion capture) to bring the story to life. I was thrilled (and honestly a little relieved!) when my story idea was chosen. It’s exciting to think that my concept is the one we’ll develop into our final project. I’m grateful that the group found something in my idea that clicked with everyone, and it felt like validation for the work I put into shaping the story.

>Once we had a unanimous decision, we moved into the next phase—brainstorming to improve and refine the story. This part was really fun because we all got to contribute to building the narrative further. We discussed how we could make the characters’ emotions more dynamic and how we can really leverage the mocap technology to emphasize their physical expressions. We also made sure the story would allow for strong character interactions and movement that would capture a wide range of emotions, which is key for performance animation.

>It’s been amazing to see how my initial idea has grown through collaboration. I think the brainstorming sessions really highlighted the power of teamwork and how much better the concept can become when everyone contributes their perspectives. We added new layers to the story, refining characters and plot points to make everything more coherent and engaging. It’s also helped me think about the story in a deeper way, especially in terms of how the motion capture process will translate into the emotions and movements we want to capture.

>Now, we’re getting closer to finalizing the story, and I’m feeling both excited and a little nervous. There’s still a lot of work to be done—especially as we start thinking about character design, motion capture sessions, and how we’ll stage and animate everything. But overall, I’m really proud of the progress we’ve made, and I’m excited to see how the story will come together in the final animation.

>I’m grateful that my idea was chosen, and I’m looking forward to continuing to work with my team to make it the best it can be. The collaboration so far has been inspiring, and I can’t wait to see how our collective effort shapes the final product.

📝Reflection on Consultation Day and Story Pitching

>This week, we had our consultation day with our lecturer, and it was an eye-opening experience for both me and my team. Even though my story had been chosen by the group, we decided to pitch all the ideas to our lecturer to make the process fair. It was an interesting but somewhat nerve-wracking experience because, despite feeling confident about my story, I didn’t manage to deliver it as effectively as I had hoped.

>During the pitch, I found myself stumbling a bit over the explanation, and I could sense that I wasn’t fully communicating the essence of my idea the way I intended. I was a bit disappointed in myself because I had practiced the pitch, but when it came time to present, I was caught off guard by the pressure of delivering it in front of my lecturer. However, I’m really grateful that my lecturer gave me the chance to continue and deliver my story, even though I wasn’t as confident as I wanted to be. Her support helped me regain some composure and remember that pitching is a skill, and like any other skill, it can be improved with practice.

>What I found really valuable during this session was the advice our lecturer gave on how to pitch a story more effectively. She shared practical tips on how to structure the pitch, how to focus on the core emotional aspect of the story, and how to engage an audience. These tips were incredibly helpful, and I’m definitely planning to apply them not only to this project but also to future presentations and pitches. I realized that pitching isn’t just about talking through the plot—it’s about conveying the heart of the story and making it resonate with others.

>After all the pitches, our group’s story took a new turn. Our leader’s story, which was about an artist dealing with an art block, was selected. I was actually really happy about this decision, even though it meant my original idea wouldn’t be the one we pursued. I’m not disappointed at all; in fact, I’m excited to work on a concept that I’ve never explored before. An art block is a unique theme, and it’s one that I haven’t really encountered in my previous 2D animation work. This is an opportunity to dive into something fresh and challenging, and I’m looking forward to the creative exploration that comes with it.

>In addition to the pitching, we also discussed the pre-production stage with our lecturer. We learned about the steps involved, including planning, research, and assigning roles within the team. I was assigned a role that will allow me to develop both my creative and technical skills, and I’m eager to get started. Our lecturer gave us some great insights on how to approach this phase and keep things organized, which will be crucial as we move forward into the production stage.

>Overall, this consultation day was a major learning experience. While I was initially disappointed in my pitch performance, I took away a lot of valuable lessons from it—both in terms of how to deliver stories more effectively and how to be open to new creative directions. I’m excited to see where this new story idea takes us, and I’m eager to apply what I’ve learned during the pre-production phase to improve my skills throughout the project. It’s a great opportunity to grow, both as an animator and as a team member, and I’m looking forward to the next steps.

📝Reflection on Role Development and Concept Art Creation

>This week has been a really productive one for our Performance Animation project. We’ve finally broken down the tasks and assigned roles within the team, so we can start diving into the work. While our director focuses on finishing the script and storyboard, my initial job was to research characters, sets, and backgrounds using the websites that our lecturer recommended. I have to admit, I didn’t know that such amazing resources existed, and I was blown away by how much they offered.

>The website I explored had an extensive library of free 3D assets that could be used for our project. It was a game-changer for me. Not only did it save us time, but it also opened up a whole new realm of possibilities that I didn’t even know we could access for free. From characters to props and entire sets, it was all there—and all free to use. I was honestly surprised by the quality of the 3D assets available. This made our job a lot easier because instead of creating every asset from scratch, we could focus on how to make these pre-made elements work for our story and style.

Once I found a few characters and props that seemed like they could fit the tone and theme of our project, I shared them with the team for feedback. We discussed which ones best suited the vision we had for the story, and it was great to have that collaborative process of narrowing down our choices. We made sure the assets matched the world we were trying to build and aligned with the aesthetic we wanted for the characters and environment.

>After finalizing our choices, my next task was to create the concept art for the sets and design elements. This part was so fun! I really enjoyed sketching out my ideas and experimenting with different concepts. It was a chance for me to take everything I’d learned about the story, characters, and setting, and put it into visual form. I found that this stage really helped me think more deeply about the world we’re creating, from the details of the background to how the characters would interact with their environment. I also loved being able to explore different styles and moods through the art, figuring out what best reflected the emotional tone of our story.

>I felt really motivated during this phase because it allowed me to directly contribute to the look and feel of the project. I’m glad I was assigned this role because it gave me the opportunity to stretch my creative muscles and bring our ideas to life visually. I also learned a lot about how concept art can serve as a foundation for the rest of the project, guiding the team in terms of color, lighting, and composition. I’ve always been interested in concept design, and this process really helped me grow in that area.

>Overall, this week was both productive and enjoyable. I’m excited to continue working on the concept art, refining the sets, and making sure everything aligns with the vision we’re building. Using the 3D assets from the website also made me realize how many resources are out there to help animators, and I’m grateful to have discovered such tools early in the project. I’m looking forward to seeing how everything starts coming together, and I’m excited to see how the next stages of production unfold.

📝Reflection on Second Consultation and Acting Workshop

>During our second consultation, we had the opportunity to participate in an acting workshop with our lecturer, and it turned out to be one of the most insightful sessions of the course so far. This workshop was all about learning how to express emotions through physicality—how to communicate feelings through movement, posture, and gestures. As animators, understanding these fundamental acting principles is key to making our characters feel alive and authentic. It was exciting to see how acting and animation are closely connected, especially when it comes to performance animation.

>We started the session by learning various techniques for expressing emotions through our bodies. This included exercises that focused on exaggerating movements to communicate clear emotions, as well as refining those movements to make them more subtle and nuanced. I found it fascinating how small adjustments in posture or facial expression can change the entire meaning of a gesture. This will be invaluable when animating our characters, as even in motion capture, these tiny details are what will make the difference between a lifeless character and one that feels fully realized.

>After we went through these exercises, our group began presenting our ideas for movement in relation to the mocap project. We set up props and created an environment for our actor to help them get into character. The goal was to allow the actor to feel the mood and essence of the character they would be portraying, and to ensure they could fully embody the character's emotions through their movements. This part of the process really helped me see how much preparation and atmosphere is needed to set the stage for a good performance. Props, environment, and vibe play such an important role in helping actors connect with their roles and bring them to life.

>Once our actor started performing, we were able to get feedback from both our lecturer and the acting teacher. They provided us with constructive criticism, and it was refreshing to hear their perspectives on how we could improve the performance. Although receiving critique can sometimes be tough, I appreciated the opportunity to learn from it. The feedback was invaluable—it helped us recognize areas where we could enhance the emotions we were trying to convey and improve the overall flow of the movements. We took all the feedback with open hearts and used it as motivation to refine our ideas.

>After the acting session, we went back to the drawing board and made adjustments to our story based on the feedback. Our lecturer advised us to tweak certain elements to ensure the story was clear and that the actions matched the emotional beats we were aiming for. We also focused on making sure the movement and acting were more expressive and engaging. It was a really productive session, and I feel that we made a lot of progress on both the conceptual and practical sides of the project.

>The main takeaway for me today was the importance of thinking "outside the box" when it comes to character performance and storytelling. Acting isn’t just about making a character "move"—it’s about understanding the emotional truth of the character and finding new ways to express that. This session has given me new tools to think about how we can push the boundaries of our project and take creative risks to make the characters feel more dynamic and emotionally rich.

>Overall, I learned so much about acting and performance, and I’m feeling much more confident in how we’ll approach the next steps of the project. I’m excited to continue refining our story and performance with the knowledge we gained today. This consultation has been a great reminder of how deeply interconnected animation, acting, and emotion are. I’m looking forward to seeing how these lessons will impact the final outcome of our mocap project.

📝Reflection on Mocap Class Tutorial with My Senior

>I recently had the privilege of participating in a mocap class tutorial with my senior, and it was an incredibly insightful and valuable experience. Throughout the session, I was able to gain a deeper understanding of how motion capture works, from the physical setup to the final software processing stages. My senior’s guidance allowed me to grasp key technical skills that I’m confident will be essential in my future projects.

>One of the first things I learned was how to properly place markers on the mocap suit. My senior showed me the correct positioning of the markers to ensure accurate tracking of the performer’s movements. This process was more precise than I had initially realized, and understanding how even small changes in marker placement can affect the quality of the mocap data was an important takeaway.

Next, I learned how to use Unreal Engine in conjunction with motion capture data. My senior explained the process of importing and setting up mocap data within the engine, and how to make adjustments to ensure the animation works smoothly within the Unreal environment. I now understand the integration process and how Unreal’s powerful real-time capabilities are used to bring motion capture to life within virtual environments, allowing for dynamic interaction and visualization.

>In addition to Unreal Engine, I was introduced to MotionBuilder, a key software used for editing and refining motion capture data. My senior demonstrated how to clean up the raw mocap data, adjusting the motion to eliminate errors or unnatural movements. We also went over how to transfer the skeleton from the mocap suit to the digital rig in MotionBuilder. This step was crucial, as it allowed the captured performance to be mapped onto a 3D character, making it ready for further refinement or animation in a production pipeline. I had not fully appreciated the intricacy involved in this process before, but now I have a clearer understanding of the steps required to make the mocap data usable for professional projects.

>Finally, my senior showed me how to use the software after the mocap session. From recording the data to applying it to the digital skeleton, I learned how to adjust the motion, solve issues that might arise, and ultimately ensure that the animation looks as natural and seamless as possible. The process of working with mocap data is far more nuanced than I had imagined, and it was incredibly helpful to have my senior guide me through each step.

Reflecting on this tutorial, I’m extremely grateful to my senior for taking the time to teach me these skills. The knowledge I gained has significantly expanded my understanding of how motion capture is used in professional production environments. I now have the confidence to work with mocap systems and software like MotionBuilder and Unreal Engine, and I feel more equipped to tackle mocap-related tasks in my own work.

>Learning these techniques not only provided me with the technical skills needed for mocap but also gave me a deeper appreciation for the complexity and precision involved in the process. I’m thankful for my senior’s patience, expertise, and willingness to share their knowledge, and I look forward to continuing to develop my skills in mocap and animation in the future.

>On the day we ran our motion capture session, my groupmates and I had the exciting opportunity to manage the entire process ourselves, from setup to the actual recording. This hands-on experience gave me invaluable insights into the practical application of mocap techniques, and I’m grateful for the teamwork and collaboration that helped us through the session.

>We began by setting up the mocap cameras. This was an important first step, as the camera placement greatly affects the quality of the data capture. My groupmates and I worked together to position the cameras around the capture area, ensuring full coverage of the performance space with minimal obstructions. Once the cameras were positioned correctly, we connected them to the system and made sure the monitoring computer was properly set up to track the data in real time.

>While my friend took on the role of the performer, wandering through a series of movements for testing, I worked alongside the director to monitor the data being captured on the computer. It was fascinating to see how the software tracked the movements in real-time, and we kept a close eye on the system to ensure everything was working properly. When we noticed any glitches or inconsistencies in the data, we would quickly adjust the cameras or make calibration tweaks. This step emphasized the importance of the technical setup and the constant monitoring required for a smooth mocap session.

>Once the camera system was ready, we proceeded with the next critical step: having our actor wear the mocap suit. We carefully attached the markers to the suit to ensure accurate tracking. This was a meticulous process, as the markers needed to be placed precisely at key points on the body. The accuracy of the data heavily depended on the correct placement of these markers, which was essential for building the digital skeleton that would drive the animation.

Once the suit and markers were in place, we moved on to testing the system. Our actor performed a series of test movements, allowing us to assess whether the cameras were detecting the movements accurately. We made sure the actor could perform a variety of actions—such as walking, bending, and reaching—to see how well the cameras and system tracked the data. If there were any tracking issues or glitches, we would adjust the markers or the suit and repeat the actions to get cleaner data. This process highlighted the importance of patience and precision in motion capture work.

>After we ensured that the system was properly capturing the actor’s movements, we started recording the acting section. Our actor performed the planned sequence of actions and expressions as part of the mocap performance. This was a crucial phase of the session, as it allowed us to capture the nuanced movements that would be transferred to the virtual character. The actor's performance was integral to the process, as the quality of the mocap data depended on the performer’s ability to deliver the movements with both precision and emotion.

>With the acting complete, we moved on to the offline retargeting phase. In this process, we took the mocap data captured from the actor and applied it to a pre-rigged digital skeleton in the software. The goal of offline retargeting is to transfer the motion data from the suit to a virtual character model, ensuring that the movements are accurately mapped. We imported the raw motion capture data, aligned it with the skeleton, and made adjustments as necessary to smooth out any inconsistencies. It was fascinating to see how the virtual character responded to the actor’s movements, and the offline retargeting allowed us to refine the animation and fix any issues before we moved on to real-time capture.

>Once we were satisfied with the offline retargeting results, we transitioned to real-time capture using Unreal Engine. This was an exciting moment, as it allowed us to see the captured data applied to a 3D character in real time. Using Unreal Engine, we could monitor how the actor’s movements translated into the virtual world, allowing us to see how the animation looked and behaved interactively. It was a dynamic process, and we used Unreal’s tools to adjust the character's animation, check for glitches, and fine-tune the motion. This phase highlighted the power of real-time mocap, where you can immediately see how the character reacts to the performer’s actions in the game engine environment.

>Throughout the entire session, I learned a great deal about the technical and creative aspects of mocap. From the careful camera setup to the marker placement and system calibration, every detail mattered. I also gained a deeper understanding of how to manage offline retargeting and how to apply captured data to a virtual rig, as well as the workflow of real-time capture in Unreal Engine. The session reinforced how mocap is not just about tracking movement, but also about capturing the emotion and intent behind those movements, which the actor brings to life during the performance.

>What stood out to me the most was how crucial teamwork was to the process. Everyone had a role to play, from setting up the mocap system to monitoring the data and guiding the actor. Communication was key to making sure everything ran smoothly, and it was clear that a successful mocap session is a collaborative effort. Even when we encountered small glitches or tracking issues, we were able to troubleshoot and make adjustments together.

This session was an invaluable learning experience, and I’m incredibly grateful for the chance to work with my groupmates. I feel much more confident in my ability to manage a mocap session, from setup to real-time capture, and I have a deeper appreciation for how mocap data can be used creatively in a 3D environment. I'm excited to continue learning and improving my skills in motion capture, and I look forward to applying these techniques in future projects.

Research about how to create a claustrophobic and confided feeling, adding 2D illustrations and integrating it into the mocap environment.

Creating a claustrophobic and confined atmosphere within a motion capture (mocap) environment, enhanced by 2D illustrations, involves a multidisciplinary approach that combines environmental design, visual art, and immersive technology. Here are some strategies and considerations based on recent research and practices:

1. Environmental Design and Visual Simulation

Designing spaces that evoke specific emotions, such as claustrophobia, requires careful manipulation of spatial elements. Techniques include reducing space dimensions, incorporating oppressive lighting, and using visual elements that enhance the feeling of confinement. For instance, in immersive theater, designers have employed bright, oppressive lighting and imagery to heighten claustrophobic feelings in certain scenes.

2. Integration of 2D Illustrations

Incorporating 2D illustrations into a 3D mocap environment can enhance the desired emotional effect. These illustrations can serve as textures on walls, floors, or ceilings, depicting imagery that reinforces the sense of confinement. Additionally, 2D elements can be used to create optical illusions that make spaces appear smaller or more enclosed than they are, further intensifying the claustrophobic atmosphere.

3. Motion Capture and Immersive Technology

Integrating these visual elements into a mocap environment requires synchronization between the physical performance space and the virtual design. Advanced motion capture systems can track performers' movements within a confined virtual space, allowing for real-time interaction with the environment. This integration can be enhanced by using immersive displays, such as head-mounted displays (HMDs) or CAVE systems, which provide a more convincing sense of presence within the confined space. Research comparing different display systems has shown that users perceive space differently depending on the representation displays and formats used, which can be leveraged to enhance the claustrophobic effect.

4. Considerations for User Experience

While aiming to evoke a sense of claustrophobia, it's essential to consider user comfort and safety. Intense experiences can lead to discomfort or distress for some individuals. Implementing features that allow users to control their exposure, such as the ability to exit the experience easily, can help mitigate negative reactions.

By thoughtfully combining environmental design, 2D illustrations, and motion capture technology, it's possible to create immersive experiences that effectively evoke a sense of claustrophobia and confinement.

Research link:

1.

Explanation for the picture

Since the girl knows that the pen has magical abilities, she starts drawing random things for fun. The colors here represent two things. First, Anon is still stuck with her decision, aware that the magic pen can draw anything, even a door that could help her escape the box. The answer is suspended, as she opens the doors—whether she chooses to go outside the box or not. Second, by drawing floral motifs inside the box, she creates something that reminds her of the outside world, representing her longing for freedom beyond the walls.

Visual Analysis

The Room: The closed, gray walls symbolize confinement or entrapment, often associated with feelings of isolation or limitation.

The Tree and Flowers: A vibrant, lively tree with colorful flowers in the middle of an otherwise dark room represents imagination, life, or hope sprouting in the face of adversity. It could be a metaphor for inner growth or creativity flourishing in harsh circumstances.

The Silhouette: The dark figure sitting in the corner, appearing to interact with the door, might signify longing for escape or connection to an external world. It emphasizes human efforts to seek freedom or purpose.

The Light Bulb: The dim light at the top suggests a controlled or artificial form of light, contrasting with the natural vibrancy of the tree. It might represent limited clarity or understanding in an otherwise restrictive environment.

The Door: A closed door being interacted with could symbolize opportunities, obstacles, or a transition point between confinement and liberation.

The Butterflies: Colorful and dynamic, they symbolize transformation, freedom, and fleeting beauty—likely echoing themes of hope and potential change.

Potential Research Themes

Isolation and Creativity:

Studies in psychology and art therapy suggest that isolation often triggers an inward exploration of imagination and creativity. The vibrant tree and flowers in this artwork could represent how the mind compensates for external deprivation through vivid inner worlds.

Nature as a Symbol of Hope:

Research on the psychological impact of nature imagery demonstrates how elements like trees, flowers, and animals evoke feelings of calmness and renewal. This is especially relevant in enclosed or artificial settings.

The Role of Light in Symbolism:

Light is frequently used in art to symbolize knowledge, clarity, or hope. The dim light contrasts with the brightness of nature in this artwork, suggesting limited clarity in a constrained space.

German Expressionism Influence:

The exaggerated emotional symbolism of the tree, combined with the confined and almost surreal environment, resonates with themes from German Expressionism. The movement explored intense emotions and inner struggles, often through distorted settings and contrasting colors.

The Psychology of Doors and Thresholds:

Doors in art often represent choice, potential, and barriers. The closed door being interacted with reflects a desire for exploration or escape, a recurring theme in psychology and literature.

Research:

Books:

Frankl, V.

This is a research related to the psychological experiences or themes of claustrophobia, dread, and suspense, there are various ways we can approach the topic. We can look at research in areas such as psychology, film studies, literature, and even game design. Here’s an overview of where to look for relevant research in each of these areas:

1. Claustrophobia

Claustrophobia is an anxiety disorder that involves the fear of confined spaces. Research on this topic often involves understanding the psychological mechanisms behind the condition, treatments, and its representation in media. Some relevant research areas include:

Psychological studies on claustrophobia:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for treating claustrophobia.

The role of exposure therapy in overcoming claustrophobic reactions.

Neuroscience of fear: How the brain processes fear in confined spaces.

Articles or books:

"The Psychology of Fear and Stress" by Jeffrey M. Lohr (for understanding fear and stress responses).

"Phobias: The Psychology of Irrational Fear" by David H.
