Hey all, this board is designed to hopefully teach you about the importance of financial security for your retirement. Everyone is going to retire at some point in their life, and it is important to plan things out long before you retire to ensure you can do everything you want to do. Personally, I would love to take a final trip to the mountains and spend a week in a small cabin with my wife and dog before settling into my small home for the remaining years. In order to make this happen, I have to think about investing and saving money now .

It also shows the importance of planning early and understanding the need to have everything settled before you retire.
The article discusses all forms of help you can receive, as well as additional savings accounts you can sign up for at a young age, like RRSP. It also shows us how a little restructuring to your plan to fit current needs and current market trends can benefit you. The couple in the article could save thousands of extra dollars each year by redoing their investment portfolio with a dedicated professional instead of using the generic bank portfolio. This last bit is what I found the most useful and it has shown me that planning now is great, but you should review the plan yearly to ensure you are getting the most out of your investments and savings.

It gives you different examples of what the term means, and stresses that it doesn't matter how much money you make, you can still be financially secure.
The best point in the article talks about not being financially secure unless you have money set aside, no matter what age. They suggest that any person looking to be financially secure should have at least 6 months of living expenses set aside. This is even more important when looking at retirement as investments can go south, and if you don't have that back up money set aside, you could be in deep trouble.

It says that realistically, you only need 50-60% of your working income to survive yearly in your retirement stage. For a couple for example, if they remove most costs such as kids, mortgage and travel each day, they can reduce their needs and live comfortably on $42,000 a year. The most useful point for me states that ideally, a couple will need approximately $300,000 for the entire duration of their retirement. This is great for me to know since it allows me to start to plan now so that I can safely have that amount in 50 years.

The main idea of the video is to show baby boomers what kind of options are out there, and what they can do to figure out their plans. Most baby boomers feel lost because they planned their retirement 20 years ago and everything they planned fell apart during the recession. The best part for younger people was that it reinforced the idea of making a plan early, and reviewing the plan yearly to ensure everything is on the right track, or correcting things if the economy changes.

The video takes a look at a older couple's life now that they are recently retired. They go over all the things they have saved up, their goals and wants for the future, and then shows the couple how to achieve these goals through additional saving funds, government programs, and investing. The most important part of the video is making sure you plan not only your investments, but your unexpected things too. Medical costs can jump in old age, and people often out live their retirement plans and scramble to try and recover at the last minute.

It is a more unique way to look at money, saving money, and working. Although it doesn't specifically talk about retirement it does fit the idea of being financially secure. The video addresses the question "how much do I need to save before I can retire?" And in reality, you can't answer that question effectively. The question you should be asking is "how little do I need to live my dream life". By asking this question, you can plan to live your dream life comfortably, without taking unnecessary risks. It also puts a dollar amount in play and allows you to work towards that goal instead of working towards and end goal that has no end.

1. The thing I learned that surprised me most is how early planning can be the most beneficial to your retirement security. I always felt that starting in your 30's or 40's was a great place to start because your career was defined and your bills were becoming smaller. If you can save as early as possible however, you will be able to save more and rely less on the riskier forms of security like investing.
2. This topic is interesting to me because I have always been interested in planning for the future and have always been responsible with my money. To be able to see what I can do now, and how it'll affect me in the future is exciting and makes me look forward to getting into the workforce and planning out my future.
3. The most interesting research was the final video I posted. I feel that it was such a unique way to look at retiring and how to save for it. It made sense to look at it as how much do I need to live my dream life instead of how much to I need to stop working. This is because the articles I read usually said to plan for 25+ years, but never gave an end goal to plan for. By planning to live for your dream life, you can plan to have a set amount each year and invest just enough to keep that amount coming for as long as you live.
